The MCU will certainly be changed forever after
Deadpool 3 releases as part of Marvel Studios' Phase 5. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have been confirmed to be making the move to the MCU proper as Wade Wilson's Deadpool and James "Logan" Howlett's Wolverine, respectively, in 2024's Deadpool 3. They'll be joined by a number of characters from Fox's X-Men Universe, reprising roles from 2016's Deadpool and 2018's Deadpool 2, in what is expected to be a world-changing, multiversal adventure for the MCU's Phase 5. With Ryan Reynolds set to stay in the MCU on a permanent basis following Deadpool 3's release, the franchise will surely never be the same.
Following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige confirmed that mutants and the X-Men would soon be coming to the MCU, and Ryan Reynolds quickly announced that Deadpool 3 was set to be produced by Marvel Studios. The MCU's first official mutants arrived in the form of Ms. Marvel's Kamala Khan and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's Namor, though several multiversal mutants have also been introduced. Although production is now underway on Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot,
Deadpool 3 will introduce a slew of mutant characters into the MCU's Phase 5, and has the potential to drastically change the future of the MCU as a whole.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige first teased the MCU's mutants at San Diego Comic Con in July 2019. Ryan Reynolds provided confirmation that Deadpool 3 would be developed by Marvel Studios in December of that year, and the project was officially announced shortly after Marvel Studios' presentation at SDCC 2022, and the film now has a release date of July 26, 2024.
10 Deadpool 3 Will Merge The MCU & Fox X-Men Timelines Deadpool 3 Is Expected To Be Set Partially In Fox's X-Men Universe
Ryan Reynolds originally portrayed Wade Wilson, Marvel Comics' Merc-with-a-Mouth, in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but debuted as a more comic-accurate version of the character in 2016's Deadpool, set within the world of Fox's X-Men Universe. Even though Deadpool will be joining the MCU permanently after Deadpool 3, portions of the Phase 5 film are expected to be set in Fox's X-Men Universe, meaning Deadpool 3 will mark the official merging of the Fox and MCU franchises. Fox X-Men actors have already appeared in the MCU, but Deadpool 3 will officially confirm the previous X-Men franchise to be an alternate reality in the MCU's multiverse, which is incredibly exciting.
9 Deadpool 3 Will Explore The Multiverse More Than Any Previous MCU Project Spider-Man, Doctor Strange & Loki Have All Experienced The MCU's Multiverse Close The concept of the multiverse was first introduced to the MCU in Phase 4's Loki season 1, and subsequent projects have explored alternate realities after the destruction of the Sacred Timeline. The multiverse has been crucial to projects including Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, What If...?, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Loki season 2, but Deadpool 3 will take this a step further. Instead of briefly exploring other realities, Deadpool 3 is suspected to be set only briefly in the MCU, as
Reynolds' Deadpool and Jackman's Wolverine will embark on an exhilarating multiversal adventure, exploring any number of new universes in the MCU.
2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gave audiences a glimpse at many alternate universes, including one ruled by HYDRA, one comprised completely of paint, and one inhabited by dinosaurs, but didn't explore many of them in any real detail, so Deadpool 3 will expand the Multiverse Saga more than any previous project.
8 Deadpool 3 Can Be The First Properly Adult MCU Movie Deadpool 3 Is The MCU's First R-Rated Movie
Following on from 2016's Deadpool and 2018's Deadpool 2, Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3 will also be R-rated, marking the first time an MCU movie has been given this rating. This means that Deadpool 3 will continue the franchise's unadulterated action and risqué jokes, creating a huge shift in the tone of the MCU. This is set to continue with
Marvel Studios' Blade reboot, and Marvel Spotlight's Echo series on Disney+, which has been given a TV-MA rating. This will allow the MCU to have greater appeal to more mature and adult audiences, moving away from the family-friendly tones that have held some of the realism back since the franchise's beginning.
7 Deadpool 3 Could Normalize MCU Fourth-Wall Breaks Fourth-Wall Breaking Was Introduced To The MCU In She-Hulk: Attorney At Law
Both in Marvel Comics and in his previous 20th Century Fox appearances, Deadpool has become famous for his use of fourth-wall breaks to speak directly to the audience. These allow viewers to be completely immersed in the action, and provide fantastic punchlines for Deadpool's constant and hilarious jokes. This is a fairly new concept in the MCU, only being introduced in 2022's She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, as Tatiana Maslany's She-Hulk also uses fourth-wall breaks. Deadpool 3 will normalize this concept, demonstrating how this could work in bigger, crossover adventures for the Merc-with-a-Mouth, and marking the first time this technique will be used in an MCU feature film.
6 Deadpool 3 Can Finally Bring The X-Men To The MCU Several X-Men Heroes Are Rumored To Be In Deadpool 3 Close Since Kevin Feige's first announcement of the X-Men's eventual introduction to the MCU, many have been wondering how Marvel Studios will integrate them into the pre-established franchise.
One popular theory has suggested that the X-Men will come over from another universe, and it's possible that this could mean characters from Fox's X-Men Universe will join the MCU alongside Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. Patrick Stewart's Professor X has already been seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Kelsey Grammer returned as Beast in The Marvels, so it's possible that even more X-Men could join Deadpool and Wolverine in Deadpool 3, and potentially have bright futures in the MCU.
5 Deadpool 3 Could Show An Incursion In The MCU For The First Time Incursions Were First Mentioned In Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness
Incursions were first mentioned in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the destructive event has been teased to already be happening in the MCU, thanks to Charlize Theron's debut as Clea. While Benedict Cumberbatch's Strange witnessed some of an incursion in Sinister Strange's universe in Multiverse of Madness, it's possible that Deadpool 3 could detail the start of an incursion between the MCU and Fox's X-Men Universe.
This could lead directly into the events of 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, as the Marvel Comics event of the same name features an incursion destroying the Marvel Universe, so Deadpool 3 could be one of the MCU's most important projects.
John Krasinski's Reed Richards, a member of Earth-838's Illuminati team, explained that, "An incursion occurs when the boundary between two universes erodes and they collide, destroying one or both entirely."
4 Deadpool 3 Can Make Future Crossovers Way More Likely Deadpool Will Be Coming From Another Reality In Deadpool 3
While characters such as Doctor Strange, America Chavez and Monica Rambeau have crossed over into other realities in the MCU, this has only ever occurred due to Chavez's specific ability, or a catastrophic disaster in the case of The Marvels' Rambeau. It surely isn't easy for characters to cross the boundaries of universes, so Marvel Studios will need to find a new way to bring Deadpool from Fox's X-Men Universe into the MCU.
This technique could then be applied to characters from other franchises, such as Sony's Spider-Man Universe, Fox's previous Fantastic Four series', and Sony's Spider-Verse franchise, who could join the MCU for future adventures, such as Secret Wars.
3 Deadpool 3 Can Break Superhero Fatigue For The MCU Audiences May Have Been Growing Tired Of The Typical MCU Stories
Since 2019's Avengers: Endgame and the conclusion of the MCU's Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios seriously increased the amount of content they produce. While this expanded the world of the MCU beyond belief, it caused an influx of so-called "superhero fatigue".
Deadpool 3 will be the only MCU feature film releasing in 2024, which should help to soften complaints of superhero fatigue. On top of this, Deadpool 3 will feel completely new for the MCU, as mutants and the X-Men have only briefly been seen or mentioned in previous projects, so this will be a breath of fresh air for the franchise, hopefully meaning subsequent stories will be better appreciated.
Following 2023's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and Blade were all delayed, and are now all set to release in 2025.
2 Deadpool 3 Can Convince More DC Movie Fans To Watch MCU Movies Deadpool 3 Will Be Darker, Funnier & More Mature
While the DC Extended Universe received a great deal of criticism during its hayday, some praised the MCU-competing franchise's darker and more mature tones compared to the MCU's more light-hearted and family-friendly nature. Deadpool 3 will negate these criticisms of the MCU, and give former DC fans something to enjoy in Marvel Studios' franchise, as it will be far more catered to adults than any previous MCU project.
Deadpool 3's R-rating may see it take on the qualities of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad and Todd Phillips' Joker, appealing to a wider audience, and giving Marvel Studios the perfect opportunity to finally show some range and experimentation.
1 Deadpool 3 Can Encourage The MCU To Go In A Drastically Different Route With Its Future Marvel Studios Could Alter The Entire MCU After Deadpool 3 Close
Deadpool 3 is expected to be one of the MCU's most popular and successful projects - at least in the Multiverse Saga, anyway - which means that Marvel Studios may rework subsequent stories to emulate the Phase 5 film's success. The Deadpool franchise's standalone quality has already been mirrored in the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy films, so it's possible that more emphasis could be put on projects such as these. After a series of disappointingly performing projects at Marvel Studios, it would be great for the MCU to finally get a win, and
Deadpool 3 may present the perfect opportunity for the revitalization of the MCU.
