Summary

- The Young Avengers setup in The Marvels is less exciting due to the movie's divisive reception and box office disappointment, making it a less safe bet for the MCU.
- The Young Avengers setup highlights a major challenge for the MCU, as they are forming the team without establishing the younger heroes as sidekicks of already established heroes. Fixing mistakes and overcoming challenges will be necessary for the Young Avengers' success.
After a long wait and a lot of speculation, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally taken the first step towards the formation of the
Young Avengers, but this setup is repeating a big Kang problem. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, which saw the deaths and retirement of various members of the original Avengers team, the MCU has been left without a main team, and theories about who will take their place haven’t stopped. Although a new Avengers team is expected to be formed at the end of the Multiverse Saga, the best option to replace the original team is the Young Avengers.
The Multiverse Saga has introduced younger superheroes linked to already established characters, further adding hope to the formation of a Young Avengers team. The MCU finally gave the first official step towards a Young Avengers team at the end of The Marvels, with Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) meeting Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to offer her to assemble a new group of young superheroes. As exciting as this is, this Young Avengers setup is, sadly, repeating a Kang problem that can become a major challenge for the MCU.
The Marvels' Young Avengers Setup Makes Its Future More Complicated
Although speculation about the Young Avengers happening at some point in the Multiverse Saga or beyond has been going for years, The Marvels offered the official setup for it – the problem is The Marvels itself. The long-awaited sequel to Captain Marvel has become one of the most divisive MCU movies as well as the lowest-grossing movie in the MCU to date, and not even its exciting setups for the future of this connected universe have helped its reputation and reception.
Adding the Young Avengers setup in The Marvels makes sense as Kamala Khan is a new and young MCU hero and her time with Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau inspired her to be a better hero, and that includes teaming up with others. However, as
The Marvels’ reception hasn’t been the best, the Young Avengers setup isn’t the exciting moment Marvel surely expected it to be, and it’s being left aside with the rest of the movie. It’s a similar situation to Kang the Conqueror, who was introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which was also a box office disappointment and didn’t do well with critics.
The Young Avengers setup in The Marvels makes it a less safe bet than it could have been had it had been alluded to or originated in other movies or TV shows, though at this point, it’s hard to predict which MCU TV shows and movies will do well enough to be the starting point for other heroes and teams. Loki succeeded at this with the introduction of He Who Remains, who ended up being a lot more interesting and exciting than Kang, so the Young Avengers are now facing the challenge of being relevant and exciting enough to attract the attention of the audience despite being set up in not-so-successful movies and TV shows.
The Marvels' Young Avengers Setup Also Highlights A Major Challenge
The Marvels’ Young Avengers setup is also bringing out other challenges that the MCU will now have to face. The MCU is going ahead with forming its Young Avengers team without having younger heroes appear as the sidekicks of other heroes, which helps the audience become acquainted with them. Although the two confirmed Young Avengers members (Kamala and Kate) have worked alongside well-established heroes, they still have a long way to go before they can be part of a team… with other equally young and inexperienced superheroes.
Of course, this could make the Young Avengers’ story a lot richer as the heroes will have to face various obstacles within the team before they can battle villains, but the point of the team is how these heroes are extensions of some of this universe’s most popular and important superheroes. The
Young Avengers’ future is still promising, but the MCU has to overcome various challenges and fix some mistakes.
