James Gunn reveals what happened to the High Evolutionary after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3"s ending. The trilogy finale for the Marvel Cinematic Universe"s cosmic team was all about Rocket coming face-to-face with the one responsible for torturing him in his childhood and transforming the Raccoon into what he is today. Rocket and the rest of the team managed to defeat the High Evolutionary, but Bradley Cooper"s character decided not to kill the villain, with the Guardians seemingly letting the High Evolutionary go down with his own ship. However, Gunn reveals the High Evolutionary had a more definitive ending than the movie let on.On Twitter, Gunn revealed that the High Evolutionary was not part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3"s deaths, with the character being taken out of his burning ship and being imprisoned on Knowhere.

The High Evolutionary was already revealed to be alive by a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 VFX artist, Miguel Ángel Acevedo Montserrat, who confirmed that Drax could be seen carrying the villain over his shoulder at the end of the film. With Drax staying in Knowhere with Nebula, it makes sense that the High Evolutionary will pay for his crimes by serving a prison sentence there.
Will Rocket Meet The High Evolutionary Again In The MCU?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3"s post-credits scenes set up the future of the team in the MCU, with the movie"s first credits scene focusing on Rocket"s new team. When the original Guardians of the Galaxy disbanded at the end of the movie, Chris Pratt"s Star-Lord named Rocket the new captain of Marvel"s cosmic team, and judging by the film"s first post-credits scene, the new Guardians are already hard at work making the galaxy a safer place.
With Rocket likely set to continue in the MCU and the High Evolutionary being alive and imprisoned on Knowhere, it is possible that the two characters" paths will cross again in the future. There are a few ways in which that could happen. The High Evolutionary could be revealed to either be a Kang variant or simply decide to help the villain — or villains, in the case of the Council of Kangs — rule the multiverse. Rocket"s team could then catch wind of that and join Earth"s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, leading to another showdown between Rocket and the High Evolutionary.
Another way that they could meet is through Rocket going back to Knowhere to consult with the High Evolutionary — who possesses one of the galaxy"s brightest intellects — in order to find a way to save the multiverse from Kang or defeat a future villain. That route would allow the two characters" relationship to come full circle, only with the High Evolutionary now being the one behind bars, following the character"s ending in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
