8 Powers Thor Has Thanks To Mjolnir & Stormbreaker
In the MCU,
Thor has wielded two formidable weapons, Mjolnir and Stormbreaker, each giving the God of Thunder an impressive collection of powers. For the majority of the MCU's Infinity Saga, Chris Hemsworth's Thor was seen carrying his trusty hammer, Mjolnir, an enchanted Asgardian tool that only the worthy could wield. After Mjolnir's destruction at the hands of Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, Thor set out to forge Stormbreaker, a powerful axe, for the battle against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Both of Thor's weapons have gifted the God of Thunder some incredible gifts, enhancing the powers that the Avenger already possesses.
While Thor's weapons in the MCU do grant him some remarkable powers, his Asgardian physiology and status as the God of Thunder means he has a wide range of innate abilities too. These gifts include superhuman strength, speed, durability, and a regenerative healing factor that allows him to life an incredibly long life. However, perhaps his most impressive power is the ability to generate electricity and control lightning - earning him his godly title. While Thor would be an extraordinary hero without his weapons, Mjolnir and Stormbreaker have allowed the Avenger to stand out from the crowd, granting him even more powers that could put other heroes to shame.
8 Mjolnir Helped Thor Control His Lightning

Thor: Ragnarok revealed that Thor's ability to generate electricity was actually biological, rather than emanating from Mjolnir as it had previously been implied. Thor learned to embrace this new side during the battle against his sister, Hela, striking her with a giant lightning bolt without the help of his hammer. However, throughout Thor's prior MCU appearances, Mjolnir proved useful in controlling and concentrating Thor's lightning blasts - which he hadn't yet learned how to control fully. He used this gift to help in The Avengers' Battle of New York, and to attempt to destroy the Aether in Thor: The Dark World. Stormbreaker would later be used for the same purpose.
7 Thor Could Manipulate The Weather Using Mjolnir

Thor's "God of Thunder" title suggests that it's not just lightning he has command over, but thunder also, and this has been proven several times in the MCU. In his earlier appearances, Thor would conjure up a huge storm in order to harness his lightning, but perhaps the most impressive showcase of Thor's control over the weather came during his MCU debut, 2011's Thor. After Thor's abilities were restored, he utilized Mjolnir to create a giant tornado, spinning the hammer as fast as he could to isolate the Destroyer and ultimately defeat it. Thunder and lightning are a brilliant omen of Thor's appearance, striking fear into his enemies hearts immediately.
6 Thor's Weapons Acted As A Protective Shield For Thor

While Thor's weapons are often used to send out a concentrated blast of his lightning, they can also be used for protective purposes. Both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker are made from an unknown but almost-indestructible metal, meaning they can withstand huge amounts of energy. At various points in Thor's MCU history, he has used his weapons to form a protective shield around him. In Thor: Ragnarok, this allowed him to be protected against Surtur's blast of flames, and in Avengers: Infinity War, Stormbreaker could even power through a blast from the combined might of all six Infinity Stones.
5 Thor Can Fly Using His Weapons

Although Thor's enhanced Asgardian abilities mean that he can jump and leap remarkable distances without much effort, he has also regularly used his weapons as vehicles to allow him to fly. Thor has most regularly displayed this power when in control of Mjolnir, as spinning the hammer at a fast speed creates enough force to hurl both Thor and the hammer immense distances. This has been demonstrated in most of Thor's early MCU appearances, most prominently in Thor, Thor: The Dark World during his battle with Malekith the Dark Elf, and The Avengers, when he saves himself from the falling SHIELD prison cell.
4 Stormbreaker Allows Thor To Use The Bifrost
![]()
After the destruction of Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok and the death of Heimdall in the opening moments of Avengers: Infinity War, it seemed as though access to the Bifrost Bridge would be lost forever. However, Thor's new axe, Stormbreaker, has the power to open the Bifrost and allow its wielder to travel safely through it. This was hugely important in getting Thor, Rocket, and Groot to Earth in Infinity War, and allowed Thor and his crew to travel to Omnipotence City in Thor: Love & Thunder. Love & Thunder also saw Stormbreaker's Bifrost abilities be abused by Gorr the God Butcher, who used it to open the door to Eternity.
3 Thor's Weapons Can Manifest His Armor
![]()
Often, Thor has found himself without his armor at times of need, or indeed needing to fit in with humanity while also needing to be battle ready. For this, his weapons come in very handy, as they allow him the ability to manifest his armor. Since Thor lacks the illusion abilities of his adoptive brother, Loki, Mjolnir and Stormbreaker are his only means to quickly manifest his battle garments. He showcases this ability in Thor's final moments, as well as in Thor: Ragnarok, during which he disguises his armor as human clothing, with Mjolnir itself masquerading as an umbrella - though they are quickly switched back when Hela appears.
2 Mjolnir & Stormbreaker Could Heal & Resurrect Thor
![]()
Thor's Asgardian physiology means he can withstand more damage than regular humans, but often, Thor pushes this to its limit, ending up needing drastic assistance. There have been two major instances when Thor has found himself close to death, but his weapons have come to his rescue. In 2011's Thor, the battle with the Destroyer initially left Thor broken and bruised, but Mjolnir returned to him, healing his wounds and restoring his strength and armor. Again, in Avengers: Infinity War, Thor's efforts to forge Stormbreaker left him close to death after being exposed to the full force of Nidavellir, but the axe made its way to Thor, restoring him completely.
1 Mjolnir Granted Jane Foster The Powers Of Thor
![]()
Phase 4's Thor: Love & Thunder revealed it's not only Thor who benefits from carrying one of his enchanted weapons. Natalie Portman reprised her role of Jane Foster for Love & Thunder, revealed to be battling cancer, but not without hope as she had acquired the powers of Thor by wielding Mjolnir. Unfortunately, Jane's continued use of Mjolnir was actually making her cancer worse, leading to her tragic death at the end of the film. However, while wielding Mjolnir, Jane was gifted the full might of Thor's powers, becoming the MCU's Mighty Thor, and aiding Hemsworth's
Thor himself in the battle against Gorr the God Butcher.
