James Gunn Confirms Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Officially Breaks The MCU"s 15-Year F-Bomb Trend

James Gunn confirms Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 breaks the Marvel Cinematic Universe"s f-bomb trend and will include the franchise"s first uncensored version of the word. The MCU has always been a more family-friendly shared universe, and the guidelines for what could be included became even more PG-13 under Disney. However, the movies have continued to become a bit more mature over the years, with Eternals including the MCU"s first sex scene, Moon Knight increasing the levels of violence, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness heightening the horror tone and imagery. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will continue to push the boundaries too.Following the release of a new clip from the movie, director James Gunn confirmed on Twitter that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 includes the MCU"s first-ever uncensored f-bomb.

The clip officially released by Marvel showed Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) trying to walk Nebula (Karen Gillan) through opening a car door and growing frustrated by her inability to do so. This leads Peter Quill to say, "Open the f***ing door," but the f-bomb is censored in the video. Gunn"s confirmation that Guardians of the Galaxy 3"s f-bomb will not be censored in theaters makes it the first MCU movie to include the full curse word. The film is still rated PG-13 because the MPAA allows one f-bomb under this rating, but more than one pushes it to an R-rating.
Every Time The MCU Has Censored An F-Bomb Before Guardians 3

Guardians of the Galaxy 3"s historic f-bomb ends a 15-year-trend of the MCU censoring any and all attempts to include the word. This history can be traced back all the way to Iron Man"s post-credits scene. Jon Favreau shot an alternate version of the scene where Samuel L. Jackson responds to Tony Stark"s questions about his identity by saying, "Nick Fury, motherf*****." Favreau knew that the alternate Iron Man post-credits scene was unlikely to be used in the final cut but wanted to at least film it just for fun.
James Gunn"s previous two Guardians of the Galaxy movies also made attempts to include the f-word. Peter Quill is cut off from finishing saying "What the f***" after the Collector"s base explodes from the Power Stone. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 technically did include an f-bomb but in an alien language. Rocket translates Groot"s goodbye to Yondu by saying, "He says, "Welcome to the frickin" Guardians of the Galaxy." Only he didn"t use frickin"." It is an obvious reference to Baby Groot cursing and using the forbidden word.
Marvel Studios has gotten more comfortable teasing audiences with an MCU f-bomb in recent projects. Spider-Man: Homecoming cuts off Aunt May saying it, Nick Fury is dusted in Avengers: Infinity War before he can finish saying "Motherf*****," and Peter Parker ends Spider-Man: Far From Home and begins Spider-Man: No Way Home with a censored f-bomb. She-Hulk: Attorney At Law also cut off Jennifer Walters from saying "Captain America f****!" With Deadpool around the corner, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 breaking the MCU"s cursing trend paves the way for more f-bombs in the future.
