Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 8 Recap & Ending Explained
Superman & Lois season 4, episode 8 reveals a villain that"s been lurking in the wings of the story, delves into the aftermath of Superman revealing his secret identity, and provides major changes for both Clark and Lex Luthor as the stage is primed for their final showdown. With Superman & Lois season 4, episode 7 having Clark go public about being Superman, it was clear episode 8 would have a lot it needed to show regarding the aftermath of this moment, which it balances admirably with several other key storylines regarding focal DC characters in the series.
Episode 8 even takes the time to add a new figure to the Superman & Lois season 4 cast, and use them to unveil what looks to be the start of Lex Luthor"s final major plan to take down Clark and Lois in the series. All in all, things have only gotten all the more significant and interesting as the live-action Superman show gets down to its last hours, and the story that unfolds here is a prime example of just that.
Lois Lane’s Cancer Story Gets A Positive Update
The story of Lois" cancer diagnosis and treatment has been a significant part of the show since its emergence in season 3. Season 4, episode 8 provides a positive update on this arc by revealing that Lois" battle with breast cancer appears to be over, as
her latest checkup confirms that she will not be needing further treatment. In a season of Superman & Lois that has brought many hardships to the titular duo, it"s a relief to see some good news come their way, especially since audiences have seen Lois every step along the way of this complicated journey.
The Impact Of Superman’s Identity Reveal Begins To Become Clear Close Naturally, since the prior episode of the show saw Superman reveal that he"s also Clark Kent to the world, episode 8 details the aftereffects of this decision. While this is initially explored via the low stakes storyline of Jonathan, Jordan and Natalie struggling to go to the movies because of the crowd that"s built up in Smallville to see Superman and his superpowered sons, the dangers of being a public hero are made clear when Lois gets a brick thrown at her through the Smallville Gazette"s window, and when Candice is harassed because she"s dating Jonathan, leading to their breakup.
While Candice and Jonathan get back together before the end of the episode, this storyline underlines that
Superman"s identity being public knowledge isn"t just something him and his family have to deal with, but that everyone in their lives is affected by. With Lex Luthor seemingly wanting Clark to have revealed his secret identity, it will be interesting to see how the weight of this decision is felt in the final two episodes of the series.
Lex Luthor Targets Lois & Superman In A Whole New Way
With Clark"s superhero secret now seemingly universal knowledge, Lex Luthor breaks out a new scheme for him and Lois to contend with.
Lex challenges Lois to a live debate on the "Godfrey!" show about whether Luthor truly has been up to no good, or whether Superman is less heroic than he appears to be, and Lois has helped conceal his "true" nature from the public.
This is made more complicated by the fact that the show the pair have this debate on - run by Tom Cavanagh"s Gordon Godfrey - has a host who appears to be already somewhat more sympathetic to Lex, having interviewed Luthor first and thus gotten his version of events beforehand. As it stands, Lois works out how to get under Lex"s skin by stating she can call his daughter, and Elizabeth will confirm her take on everything - only for the debate to be cut off by Superman having to fly out of the building in order to deal with a new opponent.
“Milton” Takes Over Steel & Starlight’s Supersuits
After Milton - seemingly Superman & Lois" version of Brainiac, given Milton Fine is an alias associated with the villain in the comics - was previously teased as a figure helping Lex Luthor in the show, episode 8 unveils him in the flesh, shown seemingly shortly after killing off prior Luthor henchman Otis to ensure he doesn"t implicate Lex in the attack on Lana Lang. Not long after,
Milton then uses his technological know-how to hack into the Steel and Starlight suits used by the Irons family, turning the Starlight suit against Jordan and Jonathan, and the Steel suit against Superman.
While Jordan and Jonathan eventually succeed against the Starlight suit - and Superman is able to contend with the Steel suit similarly -
Milton is able to update the Steel suit"s programming to separate it from John Henry Irons and bring it back for Lex Luthor to use instead going forward in the show. Given Milton discusses upgrading the suit, it seems there"s a good chance that Lex"s version of it will pose even more of a threat to the Man of Steel - especially since season 4, episode 8 also details the fact that Clark"s powers are set to steadily keep fading.
Steel Gives Superman Some Bad News
Following Clark explaining to John that his superhearing hasn"t been the same since his revival, the tech genius calls Superman in for a checkup. This scan reveals to Irons that Clark"s body is slowly deteriorating as a result of his new heart being unable to keep up with the rest of his body, since it came from the older human body of General Sam Lane. As Steel explains it,
this should mean that Clark"s powers will continue to lessen with time, until he eventually may have none altogether.
Since this conversation also reveals that Clark"s days look to be numbered, and that he"ll likely only have as long as Sam Lane would have himself had left, it"s a somber storyline - and one that grows more somber when Clark has to tell his children that this is the case towards the end of the episode. With Lex Luthor stronger than ever and Clark at a weaker point, it seems the stage is set for a climactic last confrontation between the pair in the final two episodes of
Superman & Lois, even if Jordan and Jonathan can also likely help.
Superman & Lois season 4 airs new episodes on Monday nights at 8/7c on The CW.
