DC Forgot To Answer One Part Of The Penguin’s Origin Story & I Can’t Stop Thinking About It
The Penguin provided me with several answers to some big questions about Oz Cobb"s backstory, but one mystery was left in limbo. By the time of The Penguin"s ending, the titular villain had been all but completely fleshed out. Oz"s relationships were laid bare, his dark urges were shown, and his faults made me and many others eagerly anticipate his next meeting with The Dark Knight in The Batman - Part II"s story.
As someone who has not been the biggest fan of most recent villain-centric stories, I was pleased that The Penguin remembered that Oz Cobb was a villain. The Penguin"s cast of characters may have made Oz sympathetic in some ways and made his motivations believable, but his backstory and what it led to kept him squarely as someone to root against. This backstory was so well fleshed out that, regardless of his villainy, Oz Cobb remains one of The Batman"s most compelling villains. That said, one aspect of Oz’s character was left unexplored, and I cannot stop thinking about it.
The Penguin Completely Changed Penguin's Origin Story Oz Cobb Is Very Different To Oswald Cobblepot
Image via Max Firstly, it is worth exploring The Penguin"s story and the changes it makes to Oswald Cobb"s comic book stories. Of course, The Penguin has several origin stories in DC Comics due to revamps and changing continuities, but most contain common elements. For instance,
Oz is often depicted as someone from a wealthy background who was bullied relentlessly by his father and brothers for his appearance and deformities. In most iterations of the comics, this resulted in Oz embracing his urge for blood and killing them, transitioning into a hardened gangster after embracing the name Penguin.
