The DCU Release James Gunn Called “The Saddest Thing I’ve Written In My Entire Life” Is Coming Out The Day After Christmas & None Of Us Are Ready

The DC Universe is a month away from the debut of the story that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn called "the saddest thing I"ve ever written in my life" - and based on his career, this sets a high bar for what"s to come. With the upcoming DC Universe release roster shortly about to begin hitting screens, the first few projects set to debut have a crucial place in ensuring the success and stability of the new era of DC"s cinematic history. While much of what"s in store is still not clear for the DCU, plenty of its early roster has been confirmed, and is set to arrive from the end of 2024 onward.
Current focus has naturally been on the 2025 Superman movie, which will be the first DCU film to release, and marks a key point for the franchise as David Corenswet takes on the role of the Man of Steel, setting the tone in a major way for everything to come next. That said, there are plenty of other announced DCU releases that are sure to have a significant impact on the franchise, with other films like the Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow movie and shows like Lanterns and Creature Commandos all in place to flesh out more characters and provide more details about the new universe.
James Gunn has spoken at length about these incoming projects, providing a series of noteworthy details about a range of installments. This has included a promising if somewhat daunting statement that one of the first DCU releases contains the saddest thing Gunn has ever written. Based on both this comment and the project"s timing in terms of release, it seems a heartwrenching story is lying in wait for when many viewers may actively least expect it - something that is sure to make it even more potent to those it catches unaware.
James Gunn Has Set Up 1 DC Universe Script As Sadder Than Anything He's Ever Written Before Gunn Stated His Saddest Script Is On The Way At 2024"s New York Comic-Con, James Gunn shed more light on what to expect from the upcoming DC Universe and its first releases. Appearing alongside the Creature Commandos cast, Gunn discussed where the DCU Superman movie was at as of October, and gave audiences a new look at the first DCU series via a Creature Commandos trailer, which also released online on Youtube the same day, ensuring viewers could get a closer glimpse at what the series - set to release weekly between December 2024 and January 2025 - will be like.
Interestingly, when speaking of the upcoming DCU show, Gunn mentioned that Creature Commandos episode 4 was "the saddest thing I"ve ever written in my entire life. It is really heartbreaking." Given how many profoundly sad and emotional moments can be found across the course of James Gunn"s body of work, this sets a major tone for the impending release - particularly since the weekly release order of the series means episode 4 will come out on December 26th, putting it directly in the holiday season and during a period where many other releases are conventionally bright and cheery.
James Gunn's Previous Scripts Suggest Creature Commandos Episode 4 Is Going To Be Emotionally Devastating James Gunn's MCU & DC Releases Set A High Bar In Terms of Sad Moments Close Those familiar with James Gunn"s scripts - most notably surrounding the superhero genre - may already have a sense of impending emotional devastation regarding what"s to come with Creature Commandos episode 4 based on the DCU co-CEO"s own description of his upcoming work. Gunn"s most recent prior script was for that of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, which is both praised and notorious for its adaptation of Rocket Raccoon"s backstory and the emotional gut punches that his mistreatment and the deaths of all of his childhood friends bring to the story.
However, this is by far not the only time Gunn has managed to provide a story that is as engrossing as it is emotionally turbulent. The prior Guardians Of The Galaxy movies provided their fair share of heart-rending moments, with scenes like Star-Lord finding out his father was responsible for his mother"s death shortly after reuniting with him or Groot"s death (and return of sorts) ensuring the franchise is no stranger to toying with its audiences" feelings.
Similarly, Gunn"s previous DC releases also have their own deeply emotional moments that make his comments about Creature Commandos all the more potent. Peacemaker explores how the titular character was profoundly damaged by his upbringing at the hands of his hateful father, adding a key tragic vein to the comedy-leaning series, and The Suicide Squad also takes care to ensure the stories of its cast are drenched in tragedy as much as they are in blood throughout the movie - most notably when it comes to David Dastmalchian"s Polka-Dot Man.
What Could Make Creature Commandos Episode 4 The Saddest Thing James Gunn Has Ever Written Creature Commandos' Set Up Already Teases More Than One Way Episode 4 Could Be So Sad Close It has been confirmed that the DCU will be keeping a core event from a previous DC movie - namely that of Rick Flag Jr"s death at the hands of Peacemaker towards the ending of The Suicide Squad. With the fact that Creature Commandos" cast has Frank Grillo playing Rick Flag Sr. in mind, it"s very possible the "saddest thing" Gunn has ever written is the part of this show addressing the storyline, as the tale of a man outliving his son due to the latter"s murder is certainly grounds for a narrative that"s intensely sad on every level.
That said, it"s also possible that this will be in reference to the stories of the rest of the Creature Commandos themselves. Amanda Waller mentions in the Creature Commandos trailer that the group has been chosen because Congress said they couldn"t use human prisoners for their plans - but that the characters aren"t regarded as human the same, and thus can be used for these missions. This set up makes the prospect of some tragic things happening to the group in whatever is in store for them feel very possible, meaning there"s more than one way the DC Universe series could manage this feat.
