Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Superman & Lois season 4, episode 5.
Superman & Lois season 4, episode 5, takes the final chapter of the DC show"s story in some interesting directions as it moves into the last half of its last season. Superman & Lois season 4, episode 4, brought the Man of Steel officially back from the dead and into the story once more, but his return has seen Lex Luthor appear again in Smallville. However, Lex"s story in this part of the series takes a major turn from his usual MO as a result of his daughter also finally appearing in the show.
Though the live-action Superman show mostly focuses on Lex Luthor"s story here, the release also provides some major events for each member of the Kent family. This is especially true since more than one character appears to have learned the family"s superhero secrets. As the official halfway mark of the last season, there"s plenty set up by the show so far that seems to pave the way to a truly satisfying conclusion for all of the Superman & Lois season 4 cast - and episode 5 only cements this idea once more.
Lex Luthor Reunites With His Daughter - But Not For Long Lex Luthor Meets Elizabeth Once More Close Superman & Lois season 4, episode 5, primarily revolves around providing a closer look at Lex Luthor"s life and what led him to this point - with the episode detailing the abuse he was subject to as a child, his terse marriage and divorce, and Luthor"s time with his daughter Elizabeth before he was put in jail. In the present day, though, Clark and Lois decide to try and reunite Lex with Elizabeth, believing this may be the only way to protect the Kent family from Luthor trying to destroy them once again.
While Elizabeth and Lex reminisce about their pasts and genuinely reconnect - especially over Elizabeth"s pregnancy, which her father had no idea of due to their lack of contact - Elizabeth demands that Lex leave Lois and the Kents alone in order for her to welcome him back into her life and start anew. Despite it all, Lex refuses to let his grudge drop, resulting in his daughter walking out on him, and exemplifying his commitment to destroying Lois and Clark"s lives.
Jonathan's New Powers Almost Ruin His Relationship Jonathan Kent Is Facing The Trials Of Using His Superpowers With Jordan taking a step back from using his powers, Jonathan steps up to the plate in episode 5, flying Lois out to meet Elizabeth and being more involved in the antics of this chapter of the story. Unfortunately for him, this increased set of responsibilities coincides with his girlfriend Candice returning to Smallville to come see him, leading to tensions between the two when he has to keep disappearing and then lying about where he"s been.
This comes to a head towards the end of episode 5, with Candice believing that Jonathan simply didn"t want her to visit, as she"s aware he"s been lying to her this whole time and is unable to think of any other explanation for this. However, Jordan clues Candice in - likely remembering how he had a similar situation with his now ex-girlfriend Sarah - which sees Candice reunite with Jonathan as a result.
It"s worth noting that Candice doesn"t specifically say she knows Clark is Superman and that the brothers have powers, but alludes to as much and says Jordan told her "everything", so presumably Candice knows the full extent of the Kent family secrets. Interestingly, this would make Candice the second character in the episode to be revealed to know this info, since one of the brothers" friends also casually references the fact she"s worked out that Clark is Superman.
Superman Relives His Death Superman Comes To Terms With His Odds Against Doomsday Close Superman"s return in Superman & Lois season 4 - and specifically his bad reaction to pushing himself flying in episode 4 - suggested that he wouldn"t be able to win against Doomsday if the two faced off again, given he lost the first time and seems currently less powerful than he was in their initial battle. Episode 5 makes sure to establish this would very much be the case, with Superman revisiting his fight via a simulation in the Fortress Of Solitude, which leads the Man Of Steel himself to confirm he would only lose again if they fought right now.
This makes things more interesting in terms of how the show will handle Doomsday, since it doesn"t currently appear that it"s a simple case of Clark learning from their original bout and applying it to a rematch in order to defeat the mutated Bizarro. However, the episode does open up a new way for Doomsday to be canceled out as a threat - although it"s very much the opposite of a physical confrontation.
Lois Lane May Have Won Doomsday Over Via Her Connection To Bizarro Doomsday May Not Need To Be Defeated In Battle Perhaps the most surprising part of Superman & Lois season 4, episode 5, comes in some of its later scenes, which see Lois Lane summon Doomsday to talk to him. Lois realizes Doomsday is being summoned by a version of the ELT she uses to alert Clark and the boys to needing their help, and appears to register that this means an element of Bizarro"s time as his own world"s Superman still exists within Doomsday.
As such, Lois uses the machine to summon Doomsday, and - banking on the fact he seemed to recognize her, and that he was in love with his universe"s version of Lois also - pleads with him to remember who he is and to leave her family alone. This appears to have potentially resonated with the remaining humanity within Doomsday, who then flies away. The closing scenes of Superman & Lois season 4, episode 5, show that Doomsday appears to have not returned to Lex"s base when he disappeared, leaving this particular story thread an especially interesting one.
While it"s unlikely this will be the last audiences see of Doomsday in Superman & Lois, it"s a fascinating way to explore more about this version of the character, since it explains and justifies why the show made the choice to have Bizarro be mutated into the other iconic DC villain. Similarly, having the show"s protagonists be able to overcome the threat of Doomsday by appealing to the traces of the hero still left in him would be a powerful way to conclude his villain arc, even if there"s still a good chance of at least one other fight with him being left in the series.
