Agatha All Along Episode 8 & 9 Ending Explained: What Happens To Billy & Agatha And What It Sets Up

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Agatha All Along episodes 8 and 9.
Agatha All Along episodes 8 and 9 provided an epic, heartfelt climax to the MCU show, answering many questions while raising others for the future of the franchise. After Agatha All Along episode 7"s ending, only three of the original coven that set off to walk The Witches" Road remained: Agatha, Jen, and Billy. Not only that but the MCU"s Lady Death was confirmed as Rio Vidal, adding a notable wildcard to the events of Agatha All Along"s two-episode finale.
With Agatha All Along"s cast smaller than ever, the final three characters embarked on the final trial of The Witches" Road while Death loomed large above them. By the time of Agatha All Along episode 9"s ending, many mysteries were answered, from the true nature of the MCU"s Witches" Road to what fate befalls Billy, Agatha, Jen, and Rio. Each of these elements was addressed, all while Agatha All Along episode 9 laid intriguing groundwork for a continuation of the storyline in the future of the MCU.
How Billy Maximoff Created The Witches' Road Close In Agatha All Along episode 6, the titular witch states to Billy that she knew he was the son of Wanda due to both magic users possessing the same tell. In Agatha All Along episode 9, this throwaway comment returned to explain perhaps the biggest reveal of the entire show: Billy created The Witches" Road. Just as Wanda used her magical power to make the Hex and embroil Westview in her idyllic world, Billy used his own abilities to physically create The Witches" Road using elements scattered throughout his childhood bedroom.
Given that Wanda possessed Chaos Magic, which allowed her to reshape reality at will, it stands to reason that her son also possesses these abilities. This explains how Billy was able to create The Witches" Road. Everything Billy needed to find Tommy was already inside him, yet he needed a physical manifestation of this to see it through. Thus, The Witches" Road was born from his Chaos Magic powers, formulating a physical series of trials and tribulations for him and the rest of Agatha All Along"s witches to overcome.
What Is The Witches' Road? Naturally, this raises the question of what exactly The Witches" Road is. Many will wonder whether it is an alternate dimension that Billy created or whether it simply happened inside the minds of the coven. That said, Agatha All Along episode 9 notes that all the show"s events happened, meaning The Witches" Road was based around a physical location just as Wanda"s Hex was with Westview. As such, the most likely explanation for The Witches" Road is that it was a large chunk of ground beneath Westview that was subconsciously molded to resemble what Billy desired to find Tommy.
Related Where Is Scarlet Witch's Other Son, Tommy Maximoff? Agatha All Along has confirmed the return of Billy Maximoff, but the Scarlet Witch"s other son, speedster Tommy, is yet to return to the MCU.
This reality is supported by two different scenes in Agatha All Along. For one, Lilia and Jen see the abandoned subway station of Westview when beneath the Road in Agatha All Along episode 7. Secondly, after regaining her powers, Jen is shown physically clawing herself out of the ground just outside of Westview. Therefore, it can be assumed that Billy excavated The Witches" Road beneath Westview subconsciously, meaning it was a physical location enabled by his power over Chaos Magic.
Does The Witches' Road Still Exist? With the knowledge that The Witches" Road physically existed, another question stemming from Agatha All Along episode 9"s ending is whether it still does. However, the ending of the episode confirmed that it no longer does. Billy uses his powers to collapse The Witches" Road, closing the entrance and turning it into a grave for Lilia, Sharon Davis, and Alice.
How Agatha Dies Explained Close Another of the biggest reveals in Agatha All Along episode 8"s ending was that Agatha died. After initially promising to turn Billy over to Rio, who thought his reincarnation went against the natural order of Death, Agatha instead chose to sacrifice herself. At first, Agatha was willing to let Billy go with Rio until the former reminded her of Marvel"s Nicholas Scratch, her son. Agatha then turned and walked towards Rio, kissing her. Physically enacting the old adage of the "Kiss of Death," Rio took the one she desired in the end, leaving Billy alive.
How Agatha Returns As A Ghost However, this death did not mean the end of Agatha in the MCU. Agatha All Along episode 9 revealed that Agatha returned as a ghost, just as she did at one point in Marvel Comics. The show does not explain exactly how this happens, yet the source material often states that ghosts are formed by beings who still have work to do on Earth. In Agatha All Along"s case, the titular witch wanted to retrieve the locket containing the hair of Nicholas Scratch, leading her to Billy as a ghost.
Agatha All Along Sets Up Tommy Maximoff's MCU Return (And Recast) Custom image by Richard Craig In Agatha All Along episode 8, the final trial of The Witches" Road takes place. During this trial, Agatha vows to help Billy find Tommy. After receiving a hint from Rio earlier in the episode, Agatha realizes that Tommy did not reincarnate alongside Billy and that the former"s soul is trapped inside the latter. Agatha coaches Billy through the steps necessary to help Tommy reincarnate as his brother did. This sequence provides many hints about Tommy"s MCU origins and future, a future that will inevitably lead to a recast of the character after WandaVision"s ending as Agatha All Along provided Billy.

Billy sees a boy being pranked by a group of teenagers. The teenagers drown the boy, who Billy states grew up in a place without love with no one to care for him. As Billy asks if he is actively killing this boy so that Tommy can be reborn, he disappears from The Witches" Road, meaning Billy got his wish and Tommy was reborn as this boy after he drowned in the pool. Where this boy, now Tommy, turns up again in the MCU remains to be seen, but what subsequently happens to Billy and Agatha hints at this.
When Will Billy Maximoff And Agatha Harkness Return? Image via Disney+ After Billy closes The Witches" Road and Agatha retrieves her locket as a ghost, the two are unsure of what happens next. Billy states that he could use some help learning about his powers before Agatha states she tends to kill those in her coven. Billy tearfully admits that he is the same after his Witches" Road creation led to the deaths of Sharon, Alice, and Lilia. Billy then creates an exit from the basement, prompting Agatha to say "Let"s go find Tommy."
This hints that Billy and Agatha will return in the MCU"s future, as will Tommy Maximoff in his new body. No confirmed upcoming MCU movies or TV shows could realistically include this storyline, but some theorized projects could. One is the rumored Young Avengers project, given that Tommy and Billy are prominent members of the team in Marvel Comics. It could be the case that Young Avengers starts with Billy and Agatha rescuing Tommy, though when this project will be filmed and released is anyone"s guess.
Why Scarlet Witch Isn't In Agatha All Along Close For fans of Wanda Maximoff, a major question stemming from Agatha All Along episode 9"s ending is why she was not in the show. Many hoped that The Witches" Road and the close ties between Agatha, Billy, and Wanda would result in the latter"s return to the MCU in some capacity in Agatha All Along. When all was said and done, Billy"s focus was on Tommy. This explains why Wanda did not return; Billy does not care for Wanda, instead only desiring to find his brother, meaning Wanda"s return would not have fit the thematic throughline of the story.
What Happens To Jennifer Kale After The Agatha All Along Ending As alluded to, Agatha All Along episode 9"s ending includes Jennifer Kale clawing her way out of The Witches" Road. This came after she regained her power by removing the bind placed on her by Agatha. Jennifer then flies away above Westview, leaving her MCU future unclear. That said, it is all but guaranteed that Jen will appear again given the events of Lilia"s trial. An Easter egg in Agatha All Along episode 7 referred to Jen as the High Priestess. If Agatha and Billy return and need a witch"s help, they now have an ally in the seemingly powerful Jennifer Kale.
Agatha All Along Confirms 11 MCU Deaths Close Fittingly for a show that included the personification of Death as a lead antagonist, Agatha All Along confirms 11 deaths in the MCU. On the side of both good and evil, many characters perished in Agatha All Along. This is somewhat of a change of pace for the MCU, which has long been criticized for reversing deaths rather than keeping them permanent.
Character Death
Cause of Death
Sharon Davis
Her hair was not included in Jen"s antidote during the first Witches" Road trial.
Alice Wu-Gulliver
Agatha stole her life force after being blasted by her magic.
Lilia Calderu
Falling on the ceiling of swords in The Witches" Road"s fourth trial.
The Salem Seven
Falling on the ceiling of swords in The Witches" Road"s fourth trial.
Nicholas Scratch
Should have died at birth, yet Death let him live longer until sickness killed him.
With all seven of the MCU"s Salem Seven villains dying alongside Sharon, Alice, Lilia, and Nicholas Scratch during the events of Agatha All Along, the show had a fairly substantial death count at 11. If Agatha is counted, the death count reaches 12. However, Agatha"s return as a ghost means she is not technically dead, leaving Agatha All Along"s ending as one that teases the continuation of the titular witch in the MCU"s future.
