I Think I"ve Figured Out The Perfect Way For Sony"s Spider-Man Universe To Continue And Redeem Its 2024 Box Office Bombs

After a series of disappointments in 2024, the future of Sony"s Spider-Man Universe is in jeopardy, but I think there"s one clear way the franchise could continue even stronger than before. Set adjacent to the MCU, Sony"s Spider-Man Universe kicked off in 2018 with the release of Venom and came to a lackluster end in December following Kraven the Hunter"s premiere. I"m not surprised the SSU never gained the popularity that other superhero franchises such as the MCU, X-Men and DCU franchises have earned, but I know how this can change.
Sony"s Spider-Man Universe released three movies in 2024, Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter, and while The Last Dance was met with some appreciation, overall, Sony"s 2024 slate was a huge disappointment. However, with projects such as Spider-Noir and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse on the horizon, I think there"s still hope for the SSU. This would involve a major shake-up for the franchise, but could be the best way forward in Sony"s Spider-Man Universe"s uncertain future.
Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Needs A New Direction After Kraven The Hunter, Venom 3 & Madame Web 2024 Was A Disappointing Year For The SSU

Half the movies in Sony"s Spider-Man Universe premiered in 2024, which could be viewed as Sony delivering a last-ditch effort to build its Marvel franchise"s reputation. Unfortunately, this didn"t have the desired effect, as Sony"s offerings weren"t of a very high standard. Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter were disastrous for the SSU, while Venom: The Last Dance didn"t match the success of its predecessors, meaning it was no surprise when Sony announced the SSU would be ending as we know it after Kraven the Hunter"s release.

The SSU"s dwindling returns and poor reputation make me glad that this version of the franchise is ending. However, Sony owns the film rights to a plethora of incredible characters from Marvel Comics, so it would be a huge shame for these characters to simply go to waste being unused. Instead, I think it would be great for the SSU to be completely restructured, with Sony establishing a new Spider-Man Universe that - imagine this - focuses on Spider-Man rather than avoiding introducing the wall-crawler and only featuring his supporting characters and adversaries.
SSU Should Focus On Spider-Man Variants In Future Projects Sony Owns The Rights To More Than Just Peter Parker's Spider-Man Close One of the biggest criticisms of Sony"s Spider-Man Universe was that the franchise never actually introduced its own version of the titular wall-crawler. We witnessed Peter Parker"s birth in the 2003-set Madame Web, but never saw him become Spider-Man, which left us feeling cheated by the franchise"s own title. I reckon the best way to avoid these criticisms in the future is for the SSU to focus solely on Spider-Man, but not Peter Parker. There are countless Spider-People from across the multiverse at Sony"s disposal that I would love to see get live-action adaptations.
Sony"s animated Spider-Verse franchise has given us a glimpse at some of these weird and wonderful Spider-People from across the multiverse. Each of these spider-themed heroes have vivid backstories in entirely separate and brilliantly different universes, which means Sony would basically never run out of storytelling potential, should the SSU be refocused to explore these Spider-Man variants. Each new project could debut a new version of the wall-crawler, which would be perfect at expanding the franchise beyond belief, and this might have already begun.
I’m Very Excited For Spider-Noir To Expand The SSU’s Spider-Verse Nicolas Cage's Spider-Noir Could Set A New Trend For The SSU

Following his animated debut in 2018"s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and a non-speaking cameo in the 2023 sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, Nicolas Cage"s Spider-Man Noir was confirmed to be returning to headline his own series. I was thrilled to hear that the Spider-Noir series would be live-action, and even more excited when Cage himself was revealed to be reprising the role, and this series could be the first in Sony"s new Spider-Man Universe. Even before the end of the SSU, Spider-Noir was expected to be set in an alternate reality.

Franchise(s) Spider-Man , Spider-Verse Cast Nicolas Cage , Lamorne Morris Spider-Noir will take place in an alternate version of the 1930s, so it could establish a new way for Sony to develop its Spider-Man stories. Following Spider-Noir, more Spider-People from the animated Spider-Verse franchise could get developed much further in their own live-action projects. Spider-Noir will be a fantastic test for Sony, perhaps opening the door for the likes of Jessica Drew"s Spider-Woman, Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Punk and Gwen Stacy"s Spider-Woman to get more attention, with their backstories being focused on in much more detail.
Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Is The Perfect Jumping-Off Point For Sony’s New Franchise Sony's Next Spider-Verse Sequel Can Develop More Spider-Man Variants

The most popular Marvel properties to be produced by Sony in recent years have been the animated Spider-Verse movies, so it makes sense that the studio would want to capitalize on this success and elaborate on some of this franchise"s Spider-People. Although it doesn"t yet have a scheduled release date, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is expected to bring the Spider-Verse trilogy to an end, concluding Miles Morales" story, but this could just be the beginning for the new SSU. This could see any number of Spider-People follow in Spider-Man Noir"s footsteps.

Posts 1 Sony"s Spider-Man Universe might have come to an end following Kraven the Hunter, but refocusing the franchise would not only finally debut Spider-Man, but would introduce some of the most unexpected versions of the wall-crawler that we didn"t even know we needed. Exploring the Spider-Verse in a series of live-action projects is surely the best new direction for Sony"s Marvel franchise. This could also give Marvel Studios the opportunity to include more Peter Parker-related characters in the MCU proper, creating huge benefits for both franchises as they continue to grow.
