DC Just Proved Exactly Why One Of My Favorite Teams Is Doomed To Always Break Up

Harley Quinn season 5 has begun streaming on Max, and the DC Universe series has already done away with one of the best teams that the show has yet introduced. Fortunately, this is the right decision for the Harley Quinn season 5 premiere, which already has a great deal to do to set up the latest season. Bringing in characters like Lena Luthor and Brainiac, and moving the action of the show to Metropolis, season 5 sets up a new and engaging chapter of the show, with an incredibly unique and unexpected future ahead.
The DC series has worked hard to create one of the best versions of Harley Quinn and has crafted a truly unique version for the wider DC Universe. Akin to projects like The Lego Batman Movie, Harley Quinn has used elements of parody in its iteration of this world, yet never feels false to the origins of the characters. The show clearly loves the material that it is based off of, allowing incredible and familiar teams and characters, including one in particular, to be portrayed uniquely yet faithfully.
Harley Quinn Season 5 Cements Why 1 DC Team Is Never Fated To Last The Gotham City Sirens Are Too Different To Work Together For Long Close The end of Harley Quinn season 4 saw the formation of the Gotham City Sirens, featuring Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Batgirl, and Catwoman - providing a slightly different take to the traditional trio that"s without Barbara Gordon. The team came together after the robbing of Nightwing"s grave and Lex Luthor’s defeat at the end of the season. This seemed to set up an excellent future for the team, but was quickly done away with in season 5. In a flashback sequence featuring Enchantress, the team break up, finding that they are too different to work together.
This makes sense: Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are traditionally depicted as villains, and the thought of them working with characters like Batgirl or Catwoman seems limited. While Catwoman wavers on either side of the law, having too much moral variance can make for great difficulties in keeping the team together. As such, while the team has some fascinating potential, there"s a reason the Gotham City Sirens often tend to work alone instead of as a group, both in the comics and in the show.
Harley Quinn's Gotham City Sirens Also Shows Why The Group Disbanding Isn't Always A Bad Thing The DC Series Shows That Teams Can Disband And Change With Time Close Doing away with the Gotham City Sirens so soon is the right choice. While it was a fun setup for the end of season 4, the concept of keeping the team together was clearly not enough to build an entire season of the show from it. Instead, viewers get to see a little piece of that, before allowing the characters to go on and further themselves in new scenarios. Sending Ivy and Harley to Metropolis is the best way to continue the series while giving it room to reinvent itself in new ways to extend its longevity.
Seeing teams like the Gotham City Sirens and others, even for a short time, makes for a rewarding experience. Just as the DCU doesn"t need to build around the Justice League, this series can allow different teams and assortments of characters to walk in and out of the cast. Having a brief look at the Sirens was an excellent way to see some of these characters coming together in fun and innovative ways, but does not need to become the focus of the whole show; if relevant, the team could always come back together.
Where Harley Quinn season 5 goes is promising, especially after the show has proven it is willing to do away with parts of the story it is no longer interested in telling. The series has instead chosen to focus on a number of compelling ideas in a new city, giving the opportunity to transform the show once again into something just as fun and engaging as the previous seasons. Doing away with the Gotham City Sirens on Harley Quinn so soon might feel disappointing for some, but it is ultimately the right choice.
