Why A Wasted Phase 1 Villain Is So Important For Iron Man"s Final MCU Story

Summary
  • The MCU's Armor Wars adaptation may feature the return of an iconic villain from the MCU's Phase 1.
  • Several villains appear in Marvel Comics' Armor Wars storyline that haven't yet been introduced to the MCU.
  • Don Cheadle's War Machine will replace Iron Man in the MCU's Armor Wars, and several other changes will also be made to the Marvel Comics story for its live-action adaptation.
An MCU Phase 1 villain who has been rumored to be returning may be very important to the storyline of Marvel Studios' upcoming Armor Wars adaptation. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige originally announced Armor Wars as a series for Disney+ back in December 2020, with Don Cheadle reprising his role of James "Rhodey" Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine, in the aftermath of Tony Stark's sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame. While Yassir Lester was hired as head writer for the series, production on Marvel Studios' Armor Wars saw major delays before being revealed to be reworked into a feature film in September 2022.
Since the reveal that Armor Wars would be reworked as a feature film in the MCU, there has been no more news on the upcoming project, leaving its future in the Multiverse Saga unclear. After Disney CEO Bob Iger's recent comments about Marvel Studios slowing down its output, Armor Wars' fate may be even less certain, but there's still a certain level of excitement, as it creates the perfect opportunity for an iconic MCU villain to return. Currently, the only actor confirmed for Armor Wars is Don Cheadle, but theories suggest that several other MCU heroes and villains could appear.
Related Armor Wars' Villain Rumor Can Make Avengers: Age Of Ultron Even Better Ultron's return to the MCU has been heavily theorized since Armor Wars was confirmed to be in development, but one new rumor makes this even better. Sam Rockwell Wants To Return To The MCU After 14 Years During a recent episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, acclaimed actor Sam Rockwell responded to rumors that he will be returning as Justin Hammer in Armor Wars. Rockwell debuted as Tony Stark's business rival Justin Hammer in 2010's Iron Man 2, and reappeared in the All Hail the King One-Shot, where he was revealed to be incarcerated in Seagate Prison. Rockwell has been rumored to be reprising the role of Justin Hammer for years, but the development of Marvel Studios' Armor Wars provides the clearest opportunity for him to return, though he neither confirmed nor denied his involvement.
Really? [There's a rumor?] Well, I’m waiting for the phone call. I’m growing the beard and everything. It's been a while [since Iron Man 2]. I'm in, dude.
Justin Hammer Plays A Major Role In Marvel Comics’ Armor Wars Close As great as it would be for Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer to simply return to the MCU, Hammer's appearance in Armor Wars could also prove crucial, as Hammer plays a major role in Marvel Comics' Armor Wars. Armor Wars, also referred to as Stark Wars, began in 1987's Iron Man #225. Penned by Bob Layton and David Michelinie, Armor Wars saw Tony Stark's Iron Man travel the globe to track down his stolen designs that were being used by notable villains, and though Justin Hammer doesn't have a large role in the story, his part to play is very important.
Justin Hammer was revealed to have recruited the Spymaster to steal Stark's Iron Man designs, which he then sold on to a number of powerful, armored supervillains, such as Stilt-Man, Beetle and Crimson Dynamo. This means that Justin Hammer was at the root of Marvel Comics' Armor Wars storyline, which in turn means that he could be vital to the development of the MCU's Armor Wars adaptation. 14 years have passed since Iron Man 2, so Hammer's vendetta against Stark surely will have grown, even in Stark's absence following Endgame, so Hammer could now become a powerful War Machine villain.
Armor Wars ActionSuperheroAdventureDrama Initially conceived as a Disney+ series, Armor Wars is an MCU movie centered on Rhodey Rhodes' mission to honor Tony Stark's legacy and keep his Iron Man technology from wreaking havoc when they fall into the wrong hands. Starring Don Cheadle as War Machine, Marvel Studios' Armor Wars adapts the eponymous comic book storyline to the big screen in the Multiverse Saga.

Indeed, the biggest change that Marvel Studios will need to make to its Armor Wars adaptation is replacing Tony Stark with James "Rhodey" Rhodes. Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark became the MCU's first on-screen superhero in 2008's Iron Man, and led the franchise for the next 11 years until Stark sacrificed himself to save the universe in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. Stark leaves several legacy heroes in his wake, including Rhodey's War Machine and Riri Williams' Ironheart, so these heroes could be gifted some of Tony Stark's Iron Man's most notable Marvel Comics storylines in the MCU's future, including Armor Wars.
While Rhodey's War Machine will be replacing Iron Man in Armor Wars - perhaps fighting to protect his friend's legacy rather than having his own work stolen - there are other major cogs of the Armor Wars machine that are missing from the MCU. Among these are a great number of armored villains who are key to Marvel Comics' Armor Wars storyline, but haven't yet been introduced to the MCU. The Avengers also play a huge role in Marvel Comics' Armor Wars, but it's unclear whether the team will be involved in the MCU's live-action Armor Wars adaptation.
Armor Wars doesn't yet have a scheduled release date, and it's unclear at what stage of production the project is currently in.
