Bullseye"s MCU Costume Continues A Disappointing Trend For The Daredevil Villain

Summary
  • Bullseye, a popular Marvel character, has yet to receive a comics accurate costume in his appearances in live-action adaptations.
  • Recent set photos from Daredevil: Born Again suggest that Bullseye's costume still falls short of the iconic design from the comics.
  • While there is hope that Bullseye may eventually receive a full comic book accurate costume in the future, it remains unclear based on the current set photos.
Recent photos and videos from the set of Daredevil: Born Again have revealed Bullseye's new live action MCU costume, and it shares some disappointing traits with previous appearances. Bullseye has been depicted in live action three times at this point. His first live action appearance was in the 2003 film Daredevil where he was played by Colin Farrell. More recently, Bullseye was played by Wilson Bethel in Netflix's Daredevil series. Bethel will reprise the role of Bullseye in the MCU series Daredevil: Born Again.
Bullseye is a surprisingly popular Marvel character for a street-level villain with no powers. Not only is he a frequent antagonist of Daredevil and heroes like The Punisher, but he has also been a bigger player in the MCU's supervillain landscape. He was also a member of the Thunderbolts, who will be getting their own movie, and later posed as Hawkeye as part of the Dark Avengers. As such a popular character, there is a lot of excitement around his debut in the MCU. Unfortunately, it does seem like there will be one disappointment surrounding his appearance.

Bullseye Has Yet To Get A Comics Accurate Costume Across Three Appearances Despite having appeared in several live-action adaptations, Bullseye has yet to be given his iconic costume from Marvel Comics. Collin Farrell's version of the character simply wore a long coat and had a scar that looked like a bullseye on his forehead. This isn't too surprising given how most comic book characters looked in 2000s adaptations. Characters like the X-Men were similarly given costumes that were significantly toned down compared to the comics.
Bullseye's next appearance in live action came in Daredevil season 3 on Netflix. This version starts out as an FBI agent who later poses as Daredevil to frame him. Because Bullseye spent a lot of time in the Daredevil suit, it made sense he wouldn't get his own. Netflix's Daredevil was canceled after this season, meaning Bullseye never got a chance to appear in his iconic costume. Though audiences might expect the MCU to make up for this, recent set photos make it seem like Bullseye is still not getting his comic book accurate costume.
In the Daredevil: Born Again set photos, Bullseye is wearing what appears to be tactical gear with a purple mask. While the design has been compared to Marco Checchetto’s take on Bullseye in the comics, it's different to even this iteration of the suit in several ways - most notably in that the mask doesn't have Bullseye's signature logo on it, and it covers more of his face than is typical for the character. While more colorful, it is still a far cry from Bullseye's iconic design from the comics.
Bullseye Deserves A Comics Accurate Suit As Much As Daredevil Bullseye not getting a comic accurate suit wouldn't be as big of a deal if it was just what Daredevil: Born Again was going for. However, it is clear from Daredevil's new, brighter costume that the MCU show is leaning in to the comics even more than the Netflix version. As such, it would be understandable to expect that Bullseye to get the same treatment in the new show, but so far it seems like that isn't going to happen.
There is still hope that Bullseye could turn up in his comic book costume at some point, as these set photos may be of an earlier encounter with Bullseye before a redesign. Falcon and the Winter Soldier waited until the season finale to put Sam in a Captain America suit, and Daredevil originally waited a season to give Matt Murdock his red devil costume. Daredevil: Born Again could just be following this trend, and could still give audiences a full Bullseye costume at some point.
