Why WandaVision’s Billy Maximoff Actor Didn’t Return For Agatha All Along

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Agatha All Along episode 5, "Darkest Hour, Wake Thy Power."
Billy Maximoff"s Wiccan has returned to the MCU, but Julian Hilliard did not return to the role for Agatha All Along following his debut in WandaVision. Kicking off the MCU"s Multiverse Saga and Phase 4, 2021"s WandaVision saw Elizabeth Olsen"s Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany"s Vision design their perfect, sitcom-style life within the confines of the Westview Hex. This involved the creation of their own family in WandaVision episode 4, which marked the MCU debuts of twins Billy and Tommy Maximoff, adapted straight from the pages of Marvel Comics.
After the Scarlet Witch dismantled the Hex in WandaVision"s finale, Vision and their twin sons ceased to exist, as they had been magical constructs created from Wanda"s grief and love. However, Agatha All Along episode 5, "Darkest Hour, Wake Thy Power," revealed that Billy Maximoff has somehow returned to the MCU, but he is played by a completely different actor. While die-hard fans may be aware of Wiccan"s Marvel Comics history, there has been some confusion about how Billy Maximoff has returned in this new form.
Julian Hilliard Played Billy Maximoff’s Wiccan In WandaVision Billy Maximoff's Wiccan Debuted In WandaVision Episode 3, "Now In Color" Wanda Maximoff"s pregnancy and the birth of her and Vision"s twins was the central narrative of WandaVision episode 3, "Now in Color," which took place in a 1970s-themed setting inside the Hex. Billy Maximoff was briefly portrayed by Baylen Bielitz as a five-year-old, but was aged-up in WandaVision episode 5, "On a Very Special Episode...," to ten-years-old, convincing his parents to allow him and his brother to keep their new dog, Sparky. As a ten-year-old, Billy Maximoff was portrayed by young actor Julian Hilliard of The Haunting of Hill House and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It fame.
Related What Happened To Scarlet Witch's Sons After WandaVision? Agatha All Along raises the idea of Scarlet Witch’s sons being alive via Wiccan, begging the question of what previously happened to them in the MCU.
1 The version of Billy Maximoff portrayed by Julian Hilliard never technically had a physical form. Instead, he was forged from the magic of the Scarlet Witch inside the Westview Hex, as was his brother, Tommy. Despite this, Billy Maximoff still exhibited the same abilities he harnesses in Marvel Comics, teasing his future as the MCU"s Wiccan, a formidable member of the Young Avengers. Billy and Tommy Maximoff disappeared along with the Hex in WandaVision"s finale, but it seems Marvel Studios has adapted his reincarnation storyline from Marvel Comics perfectly.
Joe Locke’s Wiccan Is The Reincarnation Of Hilliard’s Billy Maximoff Joe Locke "Teen" Was Outed As Wiccan In Agatha All Along Episode 5 Close Ever since he was confirmed to be joining Kathryn Hahn and the rest of Agatha All Along"s incredible cast, popular theories suggested that Joe Locke was portraying the reincarnation of Billy Maximoff in the MCU"s Phase 5. While doubt was cast on this coming to fruition, the ending of Agatha All Along episode 5 finally confirmed Joe Locke to be Wiccan, displaying the same blue magic that Julian Hilliard used in WandaVision. While Julian Hilliard may now be old enough to have portrayed the teenage Wiccan, this wouldn"t have been an accurate adaptation from Marvel Comics.

Long after Billy Maximoff was reabsorbed by Mephisto in Marvel Comics, his soul was reincarnated in the body of Billy Kaplan. This saw Billy Maximoff debut as an entirely new character, but he was still confirmed to be the son of the Scarlet Witch. This is likely the case in Agatha All Along, explaining why Hilliard did not reprise the role. While he hasn"t yet been named, it seems Joe Locke is Billy Kaplan, inhabited by Billy Maximoff"s soul. His connection to the Scarlet Witch is still clear, however, and Agatha All Along"s upcoming episodes will explain how.
Julian Hilliard Could Still Return As Wiccan In The MCU’s Future Multiversal Maximoffs Have Already Been Seen In The MCU While it is very exciting to see Joe Locke"s Wiccan in the MCU, it"s also a shame that Julian Hilliard hasn"t returned to portray the role. Hilliard and Jett Klyne, who portrayed the young Tommy Maximoff, were stand-outs in WandaVision, but Marvel Studios may have already revealed how they can return. On Earth-838 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Billy and Tommy Maximoff had physical bodies, so it"s very possible that versions of Wiccan and Speed from across the multiverse could return in the MCU"s future.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw Earth-616"s Scarlet Witch use the Darkhold to dreamwalk into her Earth-838 variant, hoping to find America Chavez, whose power would enable her to travel to a universe where she could reunite with her children.
2022"s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness didn"t confirm or deny whether Earth-838"s Billy and Tommy Maximoff had their superpowers. However, Earth-838"s Scarlet Witch did show off her own powers, so it"s likely her children have inherited their impressive gifts. After Earth-616"s Scarlet Witch possessed their mother and forced her to do unspeakable things, Earth-838"s Billy and Tommy Maximoff could seek vengeance, allowing them to return to the MCU and perhaps go toe-to-toe with Joe Locke"s Wiccan from Agatha All Along.
