Hugh Jackman"s Wolverine Joins Avengers: Endgame"s Time Travel Mission In Cool MCU Art

Summary
  • Fan art shows Wolverine joining the Avengers for their dangerous Avengers: Endgame time travel mission.
  • No X-Men have appeared in What If...? because Marvel Studios wants to introduce them in live-action first.
  • Wolverine's inclusion in the Time Heist could have had major implications for Avengers: Endgame.
In new fan art suggesting a possible storyline for Marvel Studios' What If...?, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine joins Avengers Bruce Banner and Steve Rogers for their daring time travel mission in Avengers: Endgame. 2019's Avengers: Endgame marked the culmination of a decade of storytelling in the live-action MCU, with the heroes that survived Thanos' Infinity War snap five-years-earlier embarking on a dangerous Time Heist to retrieve the six Infinity Stones and reverse the Mad Titan's devastation. This epic tale could be prime ground for future episodes of Marvel Studios' What If...?, which may feature some exciting new additions to the MCU.
The core heroes embarking on Avengers: Endgame's Time Heist were the original six Avengers, and two of them, Bruce Banner's Smart Hulk and Steve Rogers' Captain America, have now been imagined alongside a multiversal ally in What If...? fan art shared by AGT Design.
The art depicts Smart Hulk and Captain America alongside Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, sporting his comic-accurate superhero costume as seen in set photos for Marvel Studios' upcoming Deadpool 3. So far, no X-Men members have been featured in What If...?'s stories, but including Wolverine in the Avengers' Time Heist could have had major implications for Avengers: Endgame.
Related Why Marvel Just Removed The X-Men From Their Most Interesting MCU Debut The final MCU release of 2023 should have featured Marvel's X-Men, but a major change to the original comics left them on the cutting room floor. When Will Mutants Join The MCU’s What If...? Show? Close Marvel Studios has now delivered two seasons of What If...?, with each episode of the animated series, narrated by Jeffrey Wright's enigmatic Watcher, exploring a new alternate reality and interesting variant characters in the MCU. However, despite having release 18 episodes of the animated series, no mutant characters have appeared in What If...?, even though Marvel Studios now owns the rights to these properties, following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. While this may be jarring for some, there is a clear reason why What If...?'s creators were stopped from using mutants and the X-Men in the series.
Speaking to Comicbook.com in January 2024, What If...? creators Bryan Andrews and A.C. Bradley noted that the X-Men were "pretty much off the table" for What If...?. This is because Marvel Studios wants to introduce these new characters into live-action first, which means that it may be several years before mutant heroes begin to show up in What If...?. The mutant Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, will be leading What If...? spinoff Marvel Zombies, but X-Men members such as Wolverine won't have a chance to engage with other heroes in What If...? until after they've debuted in the live-action MCU.
