The Flash"s Classic Cameo Is Not Who Everybody Thought It Was, New Report Reveals
Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for The Flash (2023)!As the movie finally races to theaters, a new report reveals that one classic
The Flash cameo is not quite who everybody thinks. Technically one of the final installments of the DC Extended Universe, and a set up for James Gunn's DC Universe, the movie finds Ezra Miller's Barry Allen going back in time and saving his mom from being killed, inadvertently resulting in major repercussions for his timeline. With the returns of both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck's Batman, as well as the long-awaited arrival of Nicolas Cage's Superman, The Flash broke open the multiverse for the DCU.
In a recent report from TVLine, sources addressed the seeming cameo appearance of Teddy Sears as the Golden Age Jay Garrick version of the DC hero in The Flash movie. The unnamed sources have confirmed that Sears did not reprise his role from The Flash season 2, but instead the character that is seen in the movie's climax among the various timelines is a "generic Golden Age Flash" depiction.
Why Teddy Sears Not Being In The Flash Makes Sense
Given one of the more iconic images of Sears from The CW's The Flash is him dressed in the Golden Age costume for the eponymous character, it's understandable some would believe the version of the hero seen in The Flash movie is the very same. Those familiar with the Arrowverse series, however, have been quick to point out that Sears appearing as Jay Garrick wouldn't make sense considering it was later revealed he was not actually Garrick, but instead was the villainous Zoom pretending to be Flash.
Despite being defeated by the end of The Flash season 2, the one way Sears could've made an appearance in the DCU movie would've been as the corpse-like Black Flash, his terrifying transformation by the Time Wraiths in which he is enslaved to the Time Force. This would also be a difficult explanation for audiences, even those familiar with the Arrowverse, as not only was he eventually killed, but the Black Flash is a more obscure Easter egg that would've gone over many heads.
