The Flash’s Alternative Movie Stars Explained
Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Flash.Barry Allen's attempt at time travel in
The Flash rewrote the DCEU's reality, causing some movie stars to lose their most iconic roles. Multiversal travel seems to be much more dangerous in the DCEU than in other pop culture multiverses, as the mere act of time traveling causes the traveler to change the past, the present, and the future simultaneously. One single variation in the past not only alters the present, but it also retroactively changes events that came long before, which results in a massive rewriting of history.
Moving a can of tomatoes saved Barry Allen's mother from being murdered, but it also caused Ben Affleck's Batman to be replaced by Michael Keaton's, Aquaman to never be born, and Superman to be killed as a baby. When Michael Keaton's Batman explains time travel in The Flash, Barry Allen learns that he placed himself in the convergence point of at least two timelines, which guarantees a rather similar Barry Allen to have a happy life with his parents as the original intended but also affects the whole world in unexpected ways. To Barry Allen's surprise, moving a can of tomatoes even changed Hollywood history.
Eric Stoltz Stars In Back to the Future
No discussion about time travel is complete without a mention to Back to the Future, where Marty McFly's trip to the past almost erased him from history. When Ezra Miller's Barry Allen brings it up while brainstorming solutions with his younger self, he struggles to understand why younger Barry and his friends refer to Michael J. Fox as Eric Stoltz. As it turns out, Barry's trip to the past somehow prevented Michael J. Fox from replacing Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, and against all odds, Eric Stoltz' performance as Marty McFly managed to be good enough to inspire Barry's couch-crashing friend Gary to tattoo Stoltz' face on his leg.
In real life, Back to the Future creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale had wanted to cast Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly from the start, but Fox's commitment to the TV series Family Ties forced them to cast Eric Stoltz instead. However, Stoltz didn't understand that Back to the Future was a sci-fi comedy, and his self-serious performance motivated Zemeckis to push for a recast even though filming had already started. Fortunately, Michael J. Fox made an impressive effort to juggle Back to the Future with Family Ties, and the rest is history — at least in real life.
