Star Trek: Legacy May Now Be Voyager"s Best Chance To Continue
The shocking cancelation of Star Trek: Prodigy may mean that the hypothetical Star Trek: Legacy show is the best chance to continue the story of Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the crew of
Star Trek: Voyager. Prodigy is the first Star Trek show to be aimed at kids, but it also served as a sequel to Voyager by updating the stories of Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) and Admiral Janeway. The end of Prodigy season 1 set up an exciting second season where Janeway, Dal R'El (Brett Gray), and their young crew would be embarking on a mission to save Chakotay and the crew of the USS Protostar from an alternate future.
Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 was confirmed to air later in 2023, but it was pulled by Paramount+, who announced that the creative team would still be able to complete work on the 20-episode run. This gives hope that Prodigy will eventually find a new home elsewhere, but it's a stark reminder of the precariousness of the Star Trek franchise in the streaming age. As fans sign one petition to save Star Trek: Prodigy, another petition to commission Star Trek: Legacy continues to gain momentum. It begs the question of which show is in the best position to continue the story of Star Trek: Voyager on Paramount+.
