DC Universe"s Timeline Is Taking Shape With New Reveal
New details about the Creature Commandos series reveals valuable information about the
DC Universe's timeline. One of the titles in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe is Creature Commandos, an animated show that adapts the DC comic book of the same name, which revolves around a group of monsters who fight Nazis in World War II. The show is expected to take place in the same continuity as movies such as Superman: Legacy and shows like Waller.
Creature Commandos' main characters are inspired by classic horror tales such as Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Bride of Frankenstein, many of which being stories rooted in the past. Characters like Batman and Superman were introduced in the 1930s, but have been updated to fit with the changing times. The monsters that inspired Creature Commandos, on the other hand, maintain close connections to their respective time periods. Adding evidence to the idea that Creature Commandos would be set a few decades than most DCU projects was the confirmation that Rick Flagg's father would be a main character. As such, there was cause to believe that Creature Commandos wouldn't fit in with modern adaptations of the Justice League, Swamp-Thing, or The Authority.
Creature Commandos Will Take Place In Modern Day After All
Interestingly, the introduction of a few key DC characters reveals that the animated DC Universe project is more relevant to the franchise than it first seemed. Apart from main members of the team such as Nina Mazursky and Dr. Phosphorus, the Creature Commandos' cast includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., as well as Steve Agee reprising his The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker role as ARGUS agent John Economos and Sean Gunn returning as The Suicide Squad's surviving Task Force X member Weasel. These characters, specifically Economos, suggest that Creature Commandos will take place in the modern day, making it easier for the animated show to tie into other DC Universe titles.
If James Gunn and Peter Safran keep the events of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker canon in the DC Universe, Rick Flag Sr. could join the Creature Commandos as a mole to exact revenge for the death of his son Rick Flag Jr., who died at the hands of Peacemaker. John Economos could be caught in the crossfire, as he helped Task Force X in The Suicide Squad, and the simple-minded Weasel could switch sides and join the Creature Commandos, where he would feel more at home due to his monstrous nature. Whatever their roles are, these three characters can link Creature Commandos with The Suicide Squad in the present day.
