Superman & Lois" Lex Luthor Addresses That R-Rated Heart Scene - "Oh, That Was Fun!"

WARNING: This article includes SPOILERS from Superman & Lois season 4, episodes 1 and 2.Michael Cudlitz details the making of the most gruesome Lex Luthor plot in any DC live-action property in Superman & Lois season 4. As the clock is ticking for The CW"s last DC TV show, Superman & Lois season 4 began with a massive bang as it brought to life The Death of Superman for the final season. With Lex being responsible for creating Doomsday, Cudlitz"s version of the iconic DC villain made sure to honor his promise from Superman & Lois season 3, with an extremely dark outcome.
Screen Rant recently chatted with Cudlitz himself for Superman & Lois season 4, as he spoke about taking on Krypton"s last son for the final scene. When Cudlitz was asked about Lex not only getting the Man of Steel"s heart but literally stomping and destroying it in front of Superboy, taking away any hopes to bring his father back from the dead, the actor shared the details in how the scene came about:
Michael Cudlitz: Interesting...that was fun, oh, that was fun. That was great! [laughs] Maybe I"m jaded. We had two or three that I just dropped that could be dropped, and it didn"t matter because once it dropped, we were out of it. Then, the one that was crushable, I think we had two actual ones that we could crush, and then we could rebuild them, if we had to, and put them back together, and they could CGI. I think we knew that, but we had two actual physical parts that we thought were going to work. I think we got it on the first one, but we wound up using everything we had for it. It"s just with a situation like that, you want to make sure you"re covered so we do a bunch for safety. But yeah, Alex [Garfin] was incredible on the scene. It"s a very, very emotional scene for the fans. I"m sure I"m gonna be well-loved after that one for a while! [laughs]
What Superman & Lois' Season 4 Heart Stomp Scene Means For The Show Close Even though The Death of Superman has been adapted before in live-action and animation, Superman & Lois season 4 is the first time they have gone to these lengths in dealing with the loss of Krypton"s last son. Having Clark"s heart actually ripped out of his chest and actually destroyed at the hands (or, in this case, an actual foot) of Lex is some of the most twisted imagery for a live-action Superman TV show. It is also one of the cruelest things that Lex has ever done to Superman, and also to his family in this instance.
This will now be one of the most complicated storylines for the show to deal with as they get closer to the Superman & Lois season 4 finale. Having his heart actually taken out of the equation puts a new twist to The Death of Superman story, while still maintaining the source material where Doomsday is at least the one that kills him. It also raises the stakes, as this isn"t simply something the Fortress of Solitude can fix in the Superman & Lois season 4 arc.
Our Take On The Superman & Lois Season 4 Scene While Superman & Lois season 3 already made it clear that this was going to be a very brutal version of Lex, seeing him actually stomp Clark"s heart is still a big shock. Even though the DC TV shows on The CW have been able to do some incredibly dark plots over the years, it"s a surprise that something like Superman"s heart being physically destroyed was actually shown. With only seven episodes left to go, time will tell how Superman & Lois season 4 will deal with the Man of Steel"s absence.
Superman & Lois season 4 airs new episodes every Monday at 8/7c on The CW.
