Joker 2 Box Office Passes Major Global Milestone (But It"s Still $285M Short Of Breaking Even)

Joker: Folie à Deux has passed a major global box office milestone, but it"s still far from making money. The musical DC comics sequel, which stars Joaquin Phoenix in the title role opposite Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, earned a D CinemaScore, the worst ever for a Hollywood superhero movie. The Joker: Folie à Deux box office has been a massive disappointment, falling short of projections with its $37.7 million domestic debut and experiencing one of the worst week 2 drops in history, dropping 81.2% for a cumulative domestic total of just $51 million against its reported $200 million budget.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Joker: Folie à Deux is projected to close out its second weekend in theaters with an international gross of $22.6 million, coming from 77 territories. This will bring its cumulative international total to $113 million and its overall global gross to $165.3 million by Sunday evening. This will make it the 20th movie of the year to pass the important $150 million global milestone, passing The Beekeeper ($152.7 million) to land at No. 20 on the 2024 worldwide chart.
However, Joker: Folie à Deux is still far from making money. Its break-even point is estimated to be roughly $450 million, which means that it still needs to make another $285 million just to turn a profit.
What This Global Milestone Means For Joker: Folie à Deux The DC Movie Likely Won't Break Even In Theaters This international weekend shows that the release still has legs in overseas territories that it does not in North America. Its 81.2% drop, likely spurred by those negative Joker: Folie à Deux reviews from both critics and audiences, was not matched internationally. The movie has had a still significant but less drastic overseas drop of 72.1%, making its global week-on-week drop roughly 75.5%. So far, the international grosses have consistently maintained a total that is more than two times the domestic gross.
Each subsequent global weekend will likely make less than this weekend"s $29.6 million...
However, even though international audiences are being kinder to the movie, this does not mean that it is going to ever break even in theaters. Overseas markets still fell below original projections and are slumping harder than the average superhero blockbuster, potentially due to a variety of factors including the controversial addition of a musical element and the divisive Joker: Folie à Deux ending. Natural diminishing returns mean that each subsequent global weekend will likely make less than this weekend"s $29.6 million, making it nearly impossible for the movie to inch past the $450 million finish line.
Our Take On The Joker: Folie à Deux Global Box Office The DC Brand Likely Won't Suffer For Long Ultimately, Joker: Folie à Deux seems destined to add to the roster of recent DC flops, which includes 2023"s Shazam! Fury of the Gods (which grossed $134.1 million against a roughly $125 million budget), The Flash ($273.1 million against roughly $220 million), and Blue Beetle ($130.8 million against roughly $125 million). However, the brand is likely to recover soon. The newly rebranded DC Universe (of which Joker is not a part, being a DC Elseworlds property) is relaunching in 2025 with James Gunn"s Superman, a buzzy title that could become a hit and right the DC ship.
