Avengers 5"s Latest Director Rumor Has Me Even More Excited For The Next MCU Team-Up
Summary
- Shawn Levy is in talks to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
- Deadpool & Wolverine's success hypes Levy as the perfect fit for the MCU's next Avengers film.
- Other interesting directors for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty could be Ryan Coogler, Sam Raimi, and the Russo Brothers.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is the next movie for the premiere Marvel Cinematic Universe team, and after a new round of updates on the project, I am confident that the movie's rumored director is the right person for the job.
Earth's Mightiest Heroes have been absent from the big screen since 2019's Avengers: Endgame. At least three of the MCU's Avengers films sit comfortably in my top ten movies in the franchise, so I am curious to see how Marvel will handle a new version of the team without Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow.
The Avengers are not currently active in the MCU, even if offscreen, which was revealed by Captain America: Brave New World footage from CinemaCon. The same footage confirmed that
Harrison Ford's Thunderbolts Ross asks the MCU's new Captain America, Sam Wilson, to restart the Avengers. Ever since Jonathan Majors was fired as Kang the Conqueror, the status of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has been up in the air, and although there are no significant story updates, a new report has revealed details about the next Avengers movie that got me excited about what Marvel is crafting.

Shawn Levy Is The Latest Director Rumored For Avengers 5 He Is The Director Of Deadpool & Wolverine
After a long time with no updates on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Deadline recently shared some info on what fans can expect from the movie.
Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is reportedly in early talks to helm the project. The anticipated movie previously had Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton attached to it. However, last November, Cretton exited Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. I would have liked to see what he would do with the movie, as Cretton's MCU debut was a breath of fresh air, with some of the best franchise's best action.
Marvel is keeping its options open for now, with the studio reportedly meeting with other directors while Levy decides.
However, I am not mad about Levy being Marvel's first choice to replace him in the slightest.
Levy would direct on a script written by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scribe Michael Waldron, with the Deadpool & Wolverine director getting his hands on the latest draft of the movie. Marvel is keeping its options open for now, with the studio reportedly meeting with other directors while Levy decides if he will be the director of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. One of the most interesting aspects of this news to me is the reveal that Levy was approached previously.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Marvel had already offered Levy the gig.
In mid-March, the Deadpool & Wolverine director passed on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty because the massive endeavor would conflict with his duties to the final season of Netflix's juggernaut series Stranger Things. Levy will direct two episodes of the show's final season and is one of its executive producers. However, as THR claims Marvel "has pushed the film by several months," Levy would be able to do both. I am a big fan of that happy ending, as Levy's MCU debut is looking like an instant classic.

Deadpool & Wolverine's Pre-Release Hype And Accomplishments Are Exactly What The Avengers Need The MCU's Only 2024 Movie Could Be The Year's Biggest Release Close It is no secret that
the Multiverse Saga has been the source of some of the worst criticism the MCU has ever received, with Phase 4 being the most criticized in the franchise's history. I believe that an important movie like Avengers: The Kang Dynasty needs to have a proven director behind it, as the film will be the first for the Avengers since Endgame and Marvel has to bounce back from recent failures in a big way. While Levy's first MCU film has yet to debut, the early hype around it sure makes him look like the perfect candidate.
Anticipation for Deadpool & Wolverine is high, and I include myself in that, as the movie seems to be exactly the kind of over-the-top multiversal ride with Deadpool and Wolverine that I was hoping to see. The response to the film's trailers has been encouraging. Deadpool & Wolverine's first trailer became the most viewed movie trailer within 24 hours of all time. The film also broke the record for most first-day ticket sales in 2024 and in the Deadpool franchise.
Deadpool & Wolverine has a shot at the $1 billion mark, which would be the MCU's first in three years.

Shawn Levy Has The Necessary Experience To Direct Avengers 5 The Director Has Major Projects Under His Belt Close
Deadpool & Wolverine has everything it needs to be the biggest multiverse adventure in the MCU so far, and that makes Levy uniquely fit to take the helm of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. His first MCU movie also deals with a large roster of characters, and given how it was reported that the next Avengers movie could include appearances from more than 60 Marvel characters, Levy becomes an even better pick. Adding to his MCU credentials, Levy has plenty of projects on his resume that I think make him perfect for the upcoming Avengers entry.
Levy's previous collaborations with Ryan Reynolds show why he would be great for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Both Free Guy and The Adam Project were movies with many moving parts and sci-fi/action elements, but at their core was a strong, intimate narrative. Levy's work over the years on Stranger Things also shows a deep level of care for a large roster of characters and great spectacle, with the director helming the most talked about episode of Stranger Things season 4, "Dear Billy."
Levy's projects show he is perfect for the MCU method, delivering humor, action, and heart in spades.

Who Else I'd Like To See Helm Avengers 5 A Few MCU Directors Could Do The Trick Close
If Levy ends up passing on the offer, then I would ideally want another MCU director to helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Marvel needs the movie to be a major success, and I think it would have the best chance of being that if a creative that already knows the franchise's inner workings and has had success in the MCU should be the one to do it. A name that has become popular, and I quite like, is Black Panther franchise director Ryan Coogler. He can do world-building like few and has experience with large casts and high-stakes superhero action.
A fan-favorite for the directing gig is Sam Raimi. As someone who grew up loving the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies and enjoyed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, I would be curious about how Raimi could insert his unique ideas in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Finally, I believe I and many others have thought about this, but bringing back the Russo Brothers to direct both
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, after their brilliant work during the Infinity Saga's Avengers and Captain America films, would also be a perfect solution if Shawn Levy's talks break down.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is the fifth Avengers film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will bring together heroes, new and old, to face off against the omnipotent Kang the Conquerer. The Kang Dynasty will also mark the beginning of phase 6 of the MCU.
