The MCU's Loki actor, Tom Hiddleston, has offered a new insight on the heartbreaking finale of Loki, stating that "His broken soul has partially healed." Loki season 2 aired in the Fall of 2023 and brought a resolute end to Loki's MCU journey as he finally reconciled with his purpose and proved the extent of his powers as one of the MCU's gods. Now sitting in a space outside of time, Loki is responsible for ensuring free will reigns in the MCU's Multiverse - though this will ostensibly give way to Kang's nefarious multiverse-spanning designs for the MCU.
In a recent interview with Backstage Magazine, Tom Hiddleston dove deep into his iconic MCU role, stating that Loki's finale partially healed Loki's broken soul. After reflecting on Loki's two deaths in the MCU and his genuine surprise at being asked to return for the seminal solo show, Hiddleston remarked on how Loki's MCU journey has brought him full circle, referencing Loki's pursuit and promise of a throne culminating in one that does not resemble what he might have expected, but that fits his arc perfectly. The full quote can be read below:
"I hope it feels redemptive because his broken soul is partially healed; and you see that this character, who is capable of love, has made a decision from and for love...At the end of Season 2, Loki is sitting on a kind of throne; but it’s not arrived in the shape he expected, and there’s no glory in it,” Hiddleston explains. “There’s a kind of burden, and he’s alone. He’s doing it for his friends, but he has to stay there without them. There’s a poetic melancholy there which I found very moving."

How Loki Season 2's Finale Changed The MCU Character's Past & Future Close Loki season 2 showed Loki at his peak, finally coming to terms with his need for love and friendship and fighting tooth and nail to keep them in his newfound life within the TVA. This version of Loki is a far cry from the one that was depicted in The Avengers, whose darkened mind saw him recklessly killing innocents for the express purpose of feeding his megalomania. He did, of course, undergo a redemptive arc in Thor: The Dark World and beyond - but it was one that ended in tragedy with his heroic death in Avengers: Endgame.
Given the Beyonders - who exist outside of time in Marvel Comics - have yet to be introduced, it could fall to Loki to fulfil this role ahead of Avengers: Secret Wars.
It was also not the Loki that butted heads with the TVA in Loki season 1. As the series took place after Avengers: Endgame, it can be easy to forget that this was the same Loki that had yet to redeem himself after heralding the Battle of New York for his own benefit. Yet the show proceeded to demonstrate Loki's inherent virtues, swiftly turning him into a beloved hero of the TVA in the space of just a few episodes, and making him the MCU's most powerful character just one season later.
Given Loki was so often portrayed as playing second fiddle to his more famous and ostensibly more powerful brother, this was a true subversion of expectations. Seeing Loki sacrifice everything for the good of countless inhabitants of the Multiverse, seize hold of and revive timelines, and position himself as a bona fide God of Stories was unlike anything that could have been envisaged for Earth-616's Loki. His new position, meanwhile, makes him quite literally central to the entire Multiverse Saga, with the future of the MCU now hinging on Loki's ability to hold timestreams together.

Having escaped from a different timeline, Loki stars in his own titular series, where he learns about the life of his predecessor and discovers the truth of time and space. In the show, Loki reluctantly becomes a part of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an interdimensional governing body that keeps time in order. On the chopping block, Loki is given a chance to save himself by helping the TVA hunt down someone more dangerous than himself - another Loki.
