10 Most Popular MCU X-Men Casting Choices, Ranked

Summary
  • The MCU has set a writer for its X-Men movie.
  • Glen Powell's new stance on Marvel movies makes his Cyclops casting hard.
  • Daniel Radcliffe is rumored to play a Wolverine variant in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Marvel Studios is developing its first X-Men movie, and there are some popular choices for who should play some of the most famous mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In recent years, the MCU has started to prepare for the inevitable arrival of the X-Men. Following the end of Fox's X-Men movies, Marvel Studios has brought back some of the franchise's stars as multiverse variants of their characters, made Ms. Marvel a mutant, and more.
2024 is a big year for the X-Men at Marvel Studios. Disney+'s X-Men '97 has shown that Kevin Feige and Marvel know how to properly handle the mutants, with the series breaking multiple records. Deadpool & Wolverine could pass the $1 billion mark, with Marvel's first movie starring characters that came from Fox drawing huge interest. With a writer attached to the X-Men reboot, attention turns to its cast and director, and there are some very exciting and popular choices to play the X-Men.

10 Jonathan Groff as Iceman The Star Has The Earnest Quality Needed For Bobby Drake Close Jonathan Groff is a name that has been brought up to play Iceman for quite some time, with some thinking the star could finally do it in the MCU. The only factor playing against the casting is Groff's age. The star is 39, and Bobby Drake seems to be a character that Marvel Studios would start developing at a younger age.
However, if the age range is not an issue, then Groff would be one of the best possible picks for Iceman. The actor has been part of popular projects in the past, such as Glee and Mindhunter, that showed very different sides of his acting range. He has shown throughout his career that he can play the honest Bobby Drake to perfection, with the right dose of charm and fun. As an openly gay man, Groff would help bring Iceman's story to life with authenticity.

9 Keke Palmer As Rogue She Is After The Role Close Keke Palmer's possible MCU casting as Rogue is different from the rest of the list. While the actress has never played the character, Palmer has started a campaign to get cast as Rogue in the next X-Men movie. The star shared cosplay photos of her as Rogue that garnered a lot of support for her to play the heroine. As such, Palmer has become one of the most popular fancasts for the X-Men reboot.
Palmer is charismatic and exudes in many of her roles the kind of confidence that Rogue is known for. As the Fox X-Men movies never really showed that side of the character, with Anna Paquin's Rogue being a shadow of her comic book counterpart, Palmer could bring the heroine's true personality to live-action. With her acting skills and enthusiasm for the role, Palmer would make for a great Rogue.

8 Anna Diop As Storm From DC To Marvel Close Anna Diop is someone who could play several roles in the MCU, but Storm would undoubtedly be the best one for the actress. Halle Berry tried to do her best with Storm in the little time she had onscreen. Then, the younger version of Fox's X-Men cast the talented Alexandra Shipp as the new Storm, only for the character to be given the short end of the stick once again.
After X-Men '97 showed that Storm is one of the most powerful X-Men and a compelling character, the MCU's X-Men reboot needs to have her in a major role. Diop has the superhero experience to take that on, having played Starfire in DC's Titans series. The Starfire experience shows that Diop would seamlessly fit in as Storm, making her a compassionate character with determination written all over her and a regal touch that is perfect for a possible Black Panther crossover in the future.

7 Mark Strong As Charles Xavier He Has Experience As A Mentor Close Mark Strong has appeared in many comic book movies over the years. The actor has a history with superhero projects, though it is at DC and not Marvel, having been part of three movies for DC. Strong was great as Sinestro in 2011's Green Lantern, and although the movie was not the best, he deserves the chance to play a major comic book role again, as he was one of its best aspects.
While he was the villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana in the Shazam! movies, there is a better future for him at Marvel that would allow Strong to play a major comic book hero instead of a villain. The actor has the perfect look to play Charles Xavier in the MCU X-Men reboot. Allied to that is the fact that Strong is perfect for a mentor role like Professor X, with his performance in both Kingsman movies guiding Taron Egerton's Eggsy showing that.
Related Casting Professor X For The MCU The X-Men are coming to the MCU, and with them, one of its most divisive figures: the affluent telepath Charles Xavier. But who could play him?
6 Sadie Sink As Jean Grey One Of The Most Important X-Men Close Sadie Sink is the most popular casting choice to play Jean Grey in the MCU. It is easy to see why, as the star not only looks pitch-perfect for the part but also has the acting skills and a great age for the role. At 22, Sink could play Jean in the MCU for more than a decade. The actress would fit perfectly as Jean Grey if Marvel chose to go with the original X-Men team to start.
That team consisted of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel, and Iceman. All the characters were very young, making Sink perfect for that take on the X-Men. The actress is most famous for her role as Max Mayfield in Stranger Things, and with the series wrapping up soon, Sink would be free to take her charm and confidence to Jean Grey in the MCU, having the skills to add levity or intensity to the role as needed.

5 Jason Isaacs As Magneto The Actor Has Played Many Villains Close Magneto is bound to be one of the most complex MCU characters the moment he debuts. While Michael Fassbender would arguably be the perfect choice for the role, Marvel is more likely to recast the Fox X-Men actors than to keep any besides Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine — the latter for a film or two. With Fassbender likely out, Jason Isaacs has emerged as the fan-favorite candidate for Magneto.
Isaacs has a diverse live-action resume that shows he would be able to peel back the many layers Magneto contains. The actor also has deep ties to superhero stories through his voice acting work. Isaacs has played major DC characters, like Superman, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, and more. Recently, he also voiced Mephisto in Marvel's Midnight Suns game. His superhero roles show Isaacs would bring gravitas to Magneto, making him intimidating.

4 Taron Egerton As Wolverine Hugh Jackman Has Commented On The Choice Close There are a few very popular names for the MCU's Wolverine making the rounds online, and Taron Egerton has been one of the most consistent picks for the character in the eyes of fans for years. Egerton even worked with Jackman in Eddie the Eagle. The Deadpool & Wolverine star addressed the rumors that Egerton could be cast as the new Wolverine, joking that "he's just got to cool his heels a little bit."
At 34 and with a great physique, Egerton is a prime candidate to take over as Wolverine. In the Kingsman franchise, the actor showed that he could lead a comic book movie or more without feeling the pressure. That is perfect for Wolverine, with his character Eggsy in the Kingsman films also showing some of the snarky attitude Wolverine knows all too well.

3 Austin Butler As Gambit From Elvis To Gambit Close Gambit has yet to be done right in live-action. The character only appeared once, and although Taylor Kitsch did not turn in a bad performance in the role, he was part of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is one of the most criticized Marvel movies. Then, Channing Tatum was cast as Gambit, but his solo movie got stuck in development hell, never getting the chance to play Gambit in live-action.
After X-Men '97 made Remy LeBeau one of its standout characters, fans are excited to see Gambit finally shine in live-action. Elvis' Austin Butler has emerged as the top candidate for that mission. The actor oozes the charm that Gambit is known for, has experience in stunning fight sequences, and has the star power to make Gambit a focal point of the MCU's X-Men like he deserves.

2 Daniel Radcliffe As Wolverine He Is Rumored For Deadpool & Wolverine Close Daniel Radcliffe is the leading favorite at the moment to play the MCU's Wolverine. The actor has anchored one of the biggest movie franchises of all time, giving life to Harry Potter for eight movies. That kind of experience as a franchise lead makes him the perfect choice to replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine after almost 25 years. Adding to that, Radcliffe's diverse body of work after Harry Potter is exciting.
Radcliffe has played everything, going from more quiet characters to more extreme and irreverent roles. Recently, the actor also got in great shape, and that, alongside his facial hair and 5'5" height, makes him a pitch-perfect Wolverine in every way. With many variants rumored for Deadpool & Wolverine, Radcliffe is believed to be in the film as the "Patch" variant of Wolverine that was teased in the trailers.
Related 10 Actors We'd Love To See Play Deadpool & Wolverine Variants In Deadpool 3 Deadpool & Wolverine"s first trailer teased that variants for both heroes will appear, and some stars would be perfect for cameos in the MCU film.
1 Glen Powell As Cyclops There Might Be A Problem Close X-Men '97 finally made Cyclops shine to a larger audience outside the comics. After the show did Scott Summers right, fans started picturing who should play him in the MCU, and Glen Powell has become the most popular casting choice not only for Cyclops but among all X-Men characters for the MCU. Powell's role in Top Gun: Maverick shows that he would make Cyclops the confident leader he should be in the MCU.
However, there is a big issue with that casting. Recently, Powell was reported to have no interest in joining the MCU. That decision means his chances of playing Cyclops in the MCU are pretty low. That said, there is still some hope, as Powell previously commented that Cyclops would be a cool superhero to play and that he even dressed up as him for Halloween, so the X-Men reboot's dream casting could still happen.
Marvel's X-Men Marvel's X-Men is the tentative title for the future debut of the legendary Marvel mutant superhero team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
