Major Spider-Man 4 Theory Answers 7-Year-Old MCU Villain Mystery
Summary
- Tom Holland's Spider-Man could face a powerful new villain in Marvel Studios' upcoming Spider-Man 4.
- Mac Gargan hasn't been seen since 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming, but he could return as Venom in Spider-Man 4.
- Peter Parker could get his black costume upgrade in Spider-Man 4 prior to Phase 6's Avengers: Secret Wars.
A three-year-old MCU theory points to a terrifying new villain being introduced to the franchise, and this is now more likely to happen in Marvel Studios' upcoming
Spider-Man 4, helping to solve a mystery that's gone unanswered since 2017. In December 2021, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige confirmed that a fourth Spider-Man project was in active development for the MCU, and though there haven't been many updates since then, Tom Holland is expected to return as Peter Parker's Spider-Man in the much-anticipated sequel. After the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker's next MCU storyline will be wildly different.
Spider-Man: No Way Home, released as part of the MCU's Phase 4, marked a huge change for Tom Holland's Peter Parker. He teamed up with his multiversal variants, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, to battle villains from other realities, before Doctor Strange's spell erased him from the memories of everyone on Earth. This means
Spider-Man 4 will catch up with Spider-Man as an anonymous hero, but this presents the perfect opportunity for some age-old MCU mysteries to finally be addressed, and for new, but familiar, villains to be introduced to battle the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Mac Gargan’s Scorpion Still Hasn’t Been Seen Since Spider-Man: Homecoming
One of these old MCU mysteries includes the introduction of Michael Mando's Mac Gargan in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. Initially, Mac Gargan debuted as a potential buyer for Adrian Toomes' alien weapons and technology, though he was apprehended by Spider-Man and arrested by the FBI. Gargan returned in Spider-Man: Homecoming's post-credits scene, which saw him approach Toomes in prison with the theory that Toomes knew Spider-Man's civilian identity.
This teased Gargan's evolution into the Scorpion, his villainous identity in Marvel Comics, and hinted at his quick return to the MCU to pose a new threat to Peter Parker's Spider-Man.
Seven years after Spider-Man: Homecoming, Mac Gargan still hasn't returned to the MCU, and is presumably still in prison, though he hasn't been seen or heard from since. In subsequent projects, Spider-Man has faced villains such as Thanos, Mysterio, and Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Lizard, Sandman, and Electro from alternate realities, but
the whereabouts of Mac Gargan and the minutiae of his vendetta against Spider-Man haven't been made clear. With Spider-Man 4 set to see Peter Parker start from scratch, this may be the perfect time for Gargan to return to the MCU, perhaps as an entirely new villain.

Mac Gargan Becomes Venom’s Host In Spider-Man 4 Theory Close Tom Hardy made an appearance as Eddie Brock from Sony's Spider-Man Universe in Spider-Man: No Way Home's post-credits scene, though he was soon returned home. However, after he was gone,
it was revealed that a small piece of the Venom symbiote had been left in the MCU, teasing the upcoming introduction of Spider-Man's black suit and Venom himself. While there are many potential characters that Venom could bond himself to, including the MCU's own version of Eddie Brock, a three-year-old theory suggests that Mac Gargan may be Venom's perfect host, and this could now be more likely than ever.
In Marvel Comics, Mac Gargan became the host of the Venom symbiote in 2005's Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #10, becoming the alien's third host after Peter Parker and Eddie Brock. This means that
Mac Gargan could return in the MCU's Spider-Man 4 as the host of Venom, addressing mysteries created in both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: No Way Home. This would also allow Venom to live on in live-action, as 2024's Venom: The Last Dance has been confirmed to be the character's final project in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, so bringing the villain into the MCU would be the best choice.

Spider-Man 4 Theory Gives Peter Parker A Major Upgrade Before Avengers: Secret Wars
A theory posed by Austin Medeiros in May 2024 suggests that this could be the perfect evolution for Mac Gargan in the MCU, helping to tie up loose ends that have gone unanswered for seven years. However,
this theory goes one step further by suggesting that Peter Parker could also get a major upgrade in Spider-Man 4. The theory notes that Peter Parker could lose his life in Spider-Man 4, perhaps in battle with Mac Gargan's Venom or the Kingpin of New York City, Wilson Fisk, which would prompt the Venom symbiote to instead choose him as its host.
Peter Parker became the first host of the Venom symbiote in Marvel Comics in 1984's Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8, in which he thought he was simply fabricating himself a new suit while on Battleworld.
Venom initially presented itself as a black suit that gifted Spider-Man more abilities, so he sported the sleek costume long after Secret Wars, before learning its true nature. The idea of Venom appearing in Marvel Studios'
Spider-Man 4 suggests Tom Holland's Peter Parker could receive his black costume prior to 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, though this could end in disaster for the young hero.
