Four powerful mutant superheroes could be transformed into terrifying villains in
X-Men '97 season 2, according to a wild but convincing new theory. X-Men '97 premiered on Disney+ in March 2024, and come to a close in May after pitting the X-Men team from 1992's X-Men: The Animated Series against formidable villains, including the Adversary, Mister Sinister, the Sentinels, Bastion, and Magneto himself. Set outside the MCU, but produced by Marvel Animation, X-Men '97 has become Marvel Studios' highest-rated project ever, and with X-Men '97 seasons 2 and 3 already in development, this success is likely to continue.
X-Men '97 season 1 concluded with a dramatic three-part finale that took inspiration from iconic Marvel Comics storylines, including 1993's Fatal Attractions and 1997's Operation: Zero Tolerance. This saw the X-Men team go up against human-Sentinel hybrid Bastion and his Prime Sentinels, while the Master of Magnetism, Magneto, also declared war on humanity, culminating in an intense mental battle with Professor X. X-Men '97 season 1's cliffhanger ending left the fate of many mutant heroes uncertain, however, and set up an even more powerful antagonist for Marvel Animation's X-Men '97 season 2, which could spell bad news for the X-Men.

Apocalypse Is Searching For His Horsemen In X-Men ’97
After Magneto helped the X-Men stop the fall of Asteroid M in X-Men '97 season 1, episode 10, "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 3," the Master of Magnetism's former base of operations mysteriously disappeared, taking the X-Men with it. This displaced the X-Men throughout time, with Cyclops and Jean Grey finding themselves in the far future of 3960 AD, while Professor X, Magneto, Rogue, Nightcrawler, and Beast arrive in Ancient Egypt in 3000 BC. Interestingly,
both of these time periods are connected to the iconic X-Men supervillain Apocalypse, teasing him as a significant threat in X-Men '97's future.
X-Men '97 season 2 may see Cyclops and Jean Grey work with the Clan Askani and Nathan Summers to battle Apocalypse in the future, and feature the team in Ancient Egypt getting to know the young Apocalypse, En Sabah Nur. Additionally,
X-Men '97 season 1 ended with Apocalypse scouring through the rubble of Genosha in the present day of 1997, where he eventually came across one of Gambit's playing cards. This all but confirmed the theory that Gambit would return as Apocalypse's Horseman of Death, which could also tease a dark turn for other members of the X-Men team.
Gambit sacrificed his own life in X-Men '97 episode 5, "Remember It," using his kinetic energy abilities to charge up and destroy the Wild Sentinel attacking the mutant nation of Genosha.
Storm, Wolverine & Morph Could Be Apocalypse’s Other Horsemen In X-Men ’97 Season 2 Close Traditionally,
Apocalypse recruits four powerful mutants to act as his Horsemen, and, luckily for him, there are three other members of the X-Men team whose whereabouts are unclear after X-Men '97 season 1. Everyone who was aboard Asteroid M is accounted for except for Storm, Wolverine, and Morph. At the time of Asteroid M's disappearance, Wolverine and Morph were aboard the X-Jet, with the latter watching over the injured clawed hero, who had been practically comatose since Magneto's brutal attack. Storm had been outside the asteroid working with Rogue and Jean Grey to try and slow its fall.
Since Storm, Wolverine, and Morph's whereabouts haven't been revealed, it's very possible that they could fall victim to Apocalypse, being transformed into his other three Horsemen alongside a resurrected Gambit.
Both Storm and Wolverine have been featured as the Horseman of Death in Marvel Comics, while Morph never became one of Apocalypse's soldiers. It would perhaps make sense for clawed mutant Wolverine to become the Horseman of War, weather-manipulating Storm to become the Horseman of Famine, and shape-shifting Morph to become the Horseman of Pestilence, setting up a tragic storyline for these three missing mutants in X-Men '97 season 2.

4 X-Men Becoming Villains Will Seriously Change The Team’s Dynamic In X-Men ’97 Season 2
Storm, Wolverine, Morph, and Gambit were core members of the X-Men team in X-Men '97 season 1, so removing them from the equation and transforming them into villains alongside Apocalypse would massively change the team's dynamic in X-Men '97 season 2. Forge and Bishop have been teased to be forming a new team of X-Men in X-Men '97 season 2, suggesting that the line-up will change significantly anyhow.
This team simply might not be strong enough to take on the combined might of Wolverine, Storm, Morph, Gambit, and Apocalypse, however, particularly if the former X-Men members' powers get enhanced.
This could also play perfectly into the soap opera-style interpersonal relationships of the X-Men team. Wolverine and Morph have a strong bond, with the latter having declared their love for Wolverine in X-Men '97's finale, so evolving them into villains together could bring them closer or push them further apart. Storm's sisterly bond with Jean Grey may be broken irreparably, while Gambit's resurrection will surely have a massive impact on Rogue and Magneto.
X-Men '97 season 1 has set up some dramatic twists and turns for the future, which may change the shape of the titular team forever.
