Summary

Hulk actor Eric Bana clarifies whether he will reprise his Marvel role in Deadpool & Wolverine. Eric Bana starred in Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk, the first live-action Hulk movie to feature a CGI version of the Jade Giant on the big screen back when the superhero genre was blooming with modern classics such as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and the early X-Men movies. Twenty-one years later, Deadpool & Wolverine's multiversal plot allows any characters from every non-MCU Marvel movie to return.
On SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham, Eric Bana is asked whether he will make a cameo appearance in the MCU's upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. Bana made it clear that he won't be in the film, and said that although he's good friends with Hugh Jackman, he "can't see that happening". Read Bana's comments and watch the full interview below:
Jess Cagle: As I was getting ready to do this interview, I ran across a couple of things saying, "Oh, we're so excited that Eric Bana is gonna be in 'Deadpool & Wolverine' as the Hulk," and I thought, "Well, that's interesting," and then I discovered that wasn't necessarily true, but there seemed to be a lot of people that want that to happen.
Eric Bana: I can't see that happening. I'm sorry, Jess.
Jess Cagle: I was excited too. I was very disappointed that that was not gonna be happening.
Eric Bana: Hugh's a very close friend of mine.
Jess Cagle: Well, that's why it makes sense.
Eric Bana: Still can't see that happening.
Eric Bana Also Explains What Drew Him To Ang Lee's Hulk Movie Bana Was More Interested In A Standalone Ang Lee Movie Than In A Marvel Franchise Close In the interview, Eric Bana also reminisces about his experience in Ang Lee's Hulk movie and explains how he made the decision to join the production. Bana states that he wasn't interested in a superhero movie at first, but the fact that director Ang Lee was helming the project convinced Eric Bana to star in Hulk. Back then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe didn't exist and superhero actors weren't attached to multiple appearances per role, so a long-term commitment was neither a draw nor an obstacle for Bana:
Jess Cagle: I assume that Ang Lee being the director of Hulk, the director was probably more of a draw than the actual character of Hulk, although maybe you always dreamed of playing Hulk, but since you always seem to gravitate toward directors, I would imagine you were like, "Hulk. I don't know. Oh, wait, Ang Lee, yes."
Eric Bana: A hundred percent. Yes. My agent was like, at first, I was like, "No way. It's not my kind of bag. I don't think this is me," and then we thought more and more about it, and I just, because also I didn't have a script when I said yes, so I was like, "Well, what's this gonna be like?" so I really, really was putting all my chips in the Ang Lee basket on that film most definitely and all I knew was it's gonna be very, very different, and also, back then, it wasn't a thing. The Marvel universe hadn't started yet.
Jess Cagle: No, it was all a myth.
Eric Bana: Yeah. You didn't go and do those films thinking you were gonna do more than one movie. That paradigm didn't exist, so you're right. It was very, very much driven by wanting to work with someone like Ang.
Ang Lee's vision certainly made the 2003 Hulk film a divisive superhero movie. Lee put a lot of focus on the character's psychological conflict, and his visual style reflected the story's intimate themes. As a result, Hulk's action sequences lacked the frequency and intensity that most viewers expected. Coupled with unconventional stylistic choices like Hulk's comic book panel-inspired transitions and dark cinematography, Hulk's slow-paced plot failed to please fans and general audiences unanimously.
Although Ang Lee's Hulk isn't commonly praised as often as early Marvel movies like Blade, Fox's X-Men movies, and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, certain aspects of the 2003 movie remain unrivaled. For instance, Ang Lee's take on Hulk's origin story and its effects on Bruce Banner's psyche are still unexplored by the MCU, and the timeless feud between General Ross and the Hulk hasn't been depicted on screen as thoroughly ever since. Given Eric Bana's comments, the only other two movies Ang Lee's Hulk could theoretically return are Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.
