Casting 10 Avengers Variants We Want To See Most In The MCU"s Secret Wars Crossover

Summary
  • Avengers: Secret Wars offers exciting cameo opportunities with Avengers variants to enhance the multiverse experience.
  • The Multiverse Saga's culmination introduces the perfect setting for various live-action Marvel characters to appear.
  • Bringing in actors like John David Washington, Sydney Sweeney, and Tom Cruise for new roles adds depth and creativity to the Multiverse Saga.
Avengers: Secret Wars has endless potential for exciting cameos, and bringing in Avengers variants would allow the Marvel Cinematic Universe to use actors who nearly got those roles in the past and more perfect choices. The latest of the Avengers movies, 2019's Avengers: Endgame, had quite the task. The film had to serve as the culmination of the Infinity Saga and did so wonderfully. Avengers: Endgame brought in plenty of characters from all over the MCU, something Avengers: Secret Wars has to beat.
Avengers: Secret Wars will also serve as the culmination of a chapter in the MCU, this time the Multiverse Saga. As such, Avengers: Secret Wars' story makes the film the perfect place for characters from not just the MCU but all live-action Marvel properties to appear in an event like never before. Using variants of the Avengers would enhance the experience, and there are some perfect choices for that.
Related What Is Secret Wars? Avengers 6's Title Explained Marvel Studios has revealed its plans for Avengers 6 entitled Secret Wars, but what is this massive event what does it mean for the MCU?
10 John David Washington As Black Panther T'Challa Needs To Return To The MCU Close Due to Chadwick Boseman's untimely passing, it made sense that Marvel Studios chose not to recast Black Panther. T'Challa's death was a key part of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Shuri's journey into becoming the MCU's new Black Panther. While Letitia Wright's character should continue as Black Panther, bringing in a new T'Challa through the multiverse in Avengers: Secret Wars would allow Marvel to not let the character's live-action potential be unfulfilled.
Shuri coming face-to-face with a variant of her brother would undoubtedly lead to one of the MCU's most emotional moments. John David Washington would be the perfect actor to play the new T'Challa, with the star's body of work including plenty of physical roles and emotional performances. At the end of the film, Washington's Black Panther could remain in the MCU, allowing T'Challa to have new stories in live-action.
9 Sydney Sweeney As Black Widow The Actress Deserves A New Marvel Role Close Sydney Sweeney has already played a Marvel character, albeit not in the MCU. Sweeney portrayed Julia Cornwall in Madame Web, which is part of Sony's Spider-Man Universe. While the actress looked great in her superhero costume and had an exciting action scene, that only lasted a few seconds at Madame Web's ending, as the movie only used the Spider-Women as visions of the future, wasting their potential.
After Madame Web became a major box office bomb, Sweeney deserves a shot at redemption as another Marvel character. The actress is the fan-favorite to play Black Cat in Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4. However, if that does not end up happening, Sweeney would make for a fantastic multiverse Black Widow in Avengers: Secret Wars. The star has the ability to play the mysterious and deadly Natasha Romanoff perfectly.
8 Emily Blunt As Captain Marvel The Actress Could Make Good On A Past Rumor Close Before Brie Larson joined the MCU as Captain Marvel, many names were rumored to play Carol Danvers. The most popular rumor regarding the character's casting was that Emily Blunt was being considered for the role. In 2018, after Larson had already been cast as the MCU's Carol Danvers, Blunt revealed that she was never approached for Captain Marvel, saying, "Oh, no, nobody ever called me about it. It was all untrue!"
Avengers: Secret Wars has the chance to make that a reality. Blunt's past connection to the role is the kind of multiverse casting that would be exciting to see, and adding to that, the actress has the skills to do such a powerful character right. Blunt's turn in Edge of Tomorrow showed that she would nail a fierce warrior like Captain Marvel with ease.
7 Keanu Reeves As Doctor Strange The Actor Previously Commented On Playing The Hero Close Following the success of the John Wick movies, Keanu Reeves has entered an exciting new chapter of his career, and the actor joining the MCU could be a continuation of that. Reeves has already played superheroes, though, at DC. The actor gave life to John Constantine in 2005's Constantine, with a sequel finally in the works after years. In DC League of Super-Pets, Reeves voiced none other than Batman.
The actor has been fancast in several Marvel roles, with Reeves having said that he would love to play either Wolverine or Ghost Rider in the future. However, another character would perhaps make for his most exciting multiverse cameo in Avengers: Secret Wars. Before Benedict Cumberbatch was cast, Reeves was one of the names floating around for Doctor Strange. In 2014, Reeves told Collider that a long contract was not the best, but a one-off cameo as Doctor Strange would escape that.
Related Why Keanu Reeves’ Childhood Dream Role Would Be His Best MCU Future Keanu Reeves has revealed what is the Marvel character that he has wanted to play since he was a kid, and that would be his perfect MCU role.
6 Josh Hutcherson As Spider-Man The Actor Filmed His Own Audition Tape Close Josh Hutcherson is most famously known for his role as Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games franchise. However, the actor tried to play a Marvel hero before getting cast in the young adult franchise. Hutcherson auditioned for the role of Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man, which ultimately ended up going to Andrew Garfield. While he was not cast as Spider-Man, a video of Hutcherson doing stunts as the character has become very popular over the years.
Based on his ability to play a charismatic, wise-cracking character like Spider-Man and clearly having the athletic skills for the role, Hutcherson is perfect for a multiverse Spider-Man. It is good that the hero is one of the MCU's most linked to the multiverse. Avengers: Secret Wars could finally see Hutcherson play Spider-Man, perhaps even teaming up with Garfield's in a full-circle moment.
5 John Krasinski As Captain America The Star Has Already Made A Multiverse Cameo Close John Krasinski has already been in the MCU and played a multiverse variant of a major character; however, that does not mean he could not come back as another hero. Krasinski was the fan-favorite to play the MCU's Reed Richards for years. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was aware of that and brought in the actor for a one-off version of Mr. Fantastic from Earth-838 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
With his Reed Richards dead and Pedro Pascal set to play the main version of the character as part of The Fantastic Four's cast, Krasinski could return as a Captain America variant in Avengers: Secret Wars. Before Chris Evans was cast, Krasinski went far in the Captain America casting process, even wearing the hero's costume. Seeing Krasinski finally play Captain America would be a major multiverse moment.
Related Why Chris Evans Initially Turned Down Captain America Chris Evans may now be iconic as the MCU"s Steve Rogers, but the Captain America actor didn"t initially want to don the stars and stripes.
4 Eric Bana As Maestro The Actor Already Played The Hulk Close The MCU could use the multiverse in Avengers: Secret Wars to bring back many actors who have already played live-action Marvel characters. One of those could be Eric Bana, who gave life to Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, in 2003's Hulk. Instead of returning as his version of the character from director Ang Lee's Hulk movie, Bana could play a new Hulk variant in Avengers: Secret Wars.
The actor's history with the role would make him an excellent choice to portray the Maestro version of Hulk. In the comics, Maestro is an intelligent and powerful Hulk from an alternate future where only a few superheroes and humans are alive after a series of world-ending events. Bana has the acting skills to bring such a nuanced, hardened character to life, making Maestro one of the MCU's most frightening foes if he appears in Avengers: Secret Wars.
3 Jensen Ackles As Hawkeye The Actor Is Rumored To Have Passed On Clint Barton Close Jensen Ackles is currently the fan-favorite to play Batman in the new DC Universe; however, the actor would make for one of the most exciting casting choices for a multiverse variant of a member of the Avengers in 2027's Avengers: Endgame. While seeing Ackles as an alternate Captain America could be cool, especially after his role as Soldier Boy in The Boys, Ackles could appear as Hawkeye instead in the crossover movie.
Long before he got to play a parody of Captain America in Prime Video's The Boys, Ackles was rumored to have been on the shortlist for the hero, and then offered the role of Hawkeye instead. However, Ackles' intense schedule for Supernatural allegedly made that impossible. Avengers: Secret Wars could bring that rumor to life, with Ackles being able to bring the most comic book-accurate Hawkeye yet to life.
2 Liam Hemsworth As Thor The Meta Casting Carries MCU History Close Liam Hemsworth playing a Thor variant in Avengers: Secret Wars is a casting that would come with a couple of different layers. Firstly, the most obvious one is that the actor is none other than the brother of the MCU's Thor actor Chris Hemsworth. That alone is enough for the casting to be exciting, and it would continue an MCU tradition, as the duo's other brother, Luke Hemsworth, appeared as an actor playing Thor in Asgardian plays in the hero's latest two solo films.
Adding to the possible multiverse casting is Liam's own history with the MCU. Before his brother Chris was cast as the God of Thunder, Liam was one of the frontrunners to play Thor in the MCU. Hemsworth revealed to WIRED that Liam did not get the role because he was deemed too young for the part, but a multiverse appearance as Thor opposite Chris would be the perfect way of finally seeing Liam as Thor.
Related 10 Actors Perfect For Thor In The MCU’s Post-Avengers 6 Reboot The MCU is rumored to be rebooted after Avengers: Secret Wars, and after several years, Chris Hemsworth could make way for a new star to play Thor.
1 Tom Cruise As Superior Iron Man The Actor Has A History With Tony Stark Close Finally, Tom Cruise appearing as Superior Iron Man in Avengers: Secret Wars would be the best use of a variant from one of the Avengers in the MCU movie. Cruise is one of the most popular actors ever, and the star has a history with Tony Stark. Before Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Iron Man, Cruise was in talks for the role, which ultimately broke down.
Related 10 Marvel Characters Tom Cruise Would Be Perfect For After Losing Iron Man Role 18 Years Ago After missing out on Iron Man and not appearing as his rumored Doctor Strange 2 cameo, there are still some MCU roles Tom Cruise would be perfect for.
In 2022, Cruise playing Superior Iron Man, an evil version of Tony Stark, became one of the biggest rumors for Marvel's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While most of the other rumored cameos for the film panned out, Cruise was nowhere to be seen. Avengers: Secret Wars would be the perfect stage to finally have Cruise play Iron Man, perhaps even having RDJ return as his Tony Stark to fight Cruise in a shocking finale to the Multiverse Saga.
Avengers: Secret Wars Avengers: Secret Wars is the sixth Avengers film and takes place during phase six of Marvel's Cinematic Universe. The film will see several heroes from the prior phases return and battle against a cosmic threat to rival Thanos, and borrows elements of the Marvel Comics event of the same name.
