Summary
  • X-Men '97 episode 8 finally brings back Spider-Man from the 1990s animated series in a monumental cameo fans have long awaited.
  • The confirmation that Spider-Man in X-Men '97 is the same version from Spider-Man: The Animated Series has sparked excitement and hope for a potential revival.
  • Marvel Animation's success with X-Men '97 hints at the possibility of reviving Spider-Man: TAS to capitalize on the love for classic animated shows.
X-Men '97 episode 8 just allowed Marvel to give Spider-Man fans something they have wanted for 30 years. After X-Men '97 episode 7's ending, many were anticipation the first installment into the three-part finale of season 1. "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1" certainly did not disappoint, providing incredible action, character building, and further fleshing out X-Men '97's secret villain Bastion.
These aspects culminated in X-Men '97 episode 8's ending, which centered entirely around Magneto. The master of magnetism was revealed to be secretly alive after his apparent death in X-Men '97 episode 5, as a prisoner of Bastion. However, with the aid of Val Cooper, Magneto escapes Bastion's binds and unleashes his powers on Earth. This led to a montage of people around the globe experiencing Magneto's power, including an incredibly exciting cameo that gives Marvel fans something they have waited three decades for.
X-Men '97 Brought Back Spider-Man: The Animated Series Christopher Daniel Barnes' Spider-Man returns in X-Men '97, 30 years after his debut. Several key X-Men '97 characters are shown reckoning with Magneto's power during this montage. Aside from these characters, X-Men '97 episode 8 used this opportunity to include some cameos from Marvel Comics characters. Two notable inclusions were Silver Samurai and Omega Red, two villains commonly associated with the X-Men in the comics.
The other - and undoubtedly most exciting - cameo in X-Men '97 episode 8 came from Peter Parker/Spider-Man himself. Spidey is shown swinging on his webs in Manhattan before sensing the waves of magnetism pulsing across the Earth. He lets his web go and backflips into the frame, watching in seeming terror as Magneto unleashes his rage. While this could have easily been just another variant of Spider-Man in the endless Marvel multiverse, X-Men '97 creator Beau DeMayo confirmed via Twitter/X that it is the same Spider-Man from Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994-1998).
Naturally, this confirmation from DeMayo, as well as the cameo itself, caused a great deal of excitement among Marvel fans. This version of Spider-Man was beloved in the 1990s, as were the X-Men of their own animated series. This love has extended into X-Men '97, with Peter Parker from Spider-Man: The Animated Series crashing the party in a way that has delighted Marvel fans.
Marvel Animation Should Revive Spider-Man: TAS Next Should Marvel Studios bring back Spider-Man: The Animated Series? As evident, a common denominator of the many reactions to Spider-Man's X-Men '97 appearance is that Marvel Animation should revive Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Since X-Men '97 was confirmed as a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, calls for Spider-Man to be continued in the same vein have been prevalent. This cameo from Christopher Daniel Barnes' Spider-Man will only bolster calls for this to happen.
X-Men: The Animated Series' ending was much more open-ended than that of Spider-Man.
Although it can be argued that Spider-Man: The Animated Series should not be revived due to its beloved ending that had a great sense of finality, Marvel Animation has proved with X-Men '97 that a continuation could work. Marvel Comics has introduced several Spider-Man characters, arcs, and storylines that were not present at the time of Spider-Man: The Animated Series that a continuation of the show could implement. This way, Marvel Animation's X-Men '97 success could continue with another show, capitalizing on the excitement caused by Spider-Man's cameo.
