Captain America 4 Is The Perfect Movie To Fix A Disastrous MCU Phase 5 Plot Point

Marvel Studios' presentation at 2024's CinemaCon revealed a first look at Captain America: Brave New World, and provided new story details about the upcoming Phase 5 project. This included showcasing Sam Wilson's new Captain America costume, and giving audiences a glimpse at Harrison Ford's new President Thaddeus Ross, with the key role recast following the late William Hurt's tragic passing in 2022. Ross being introduced as the United States' President in Captain America: Brave New World raises questions about the franchise's previous President Ritson, played by Dermot Mulroney, who was last seen making a shocking declaration in 2023's Secret Invasion.

Throughout Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion series, President Ritson's office was quietly manipulated by members of the Skrull rebellion, including the Skrull Raava, who had replaced Don Cheadle's Rhodey. Rhodey rose through the ranks of the United States government to become Ritson's aide, while orchestrating several assassination attempts, and scheming in an effort to incite World War III. While these plans were unsuccessful, Ritson's new knowledge of dangerous Skrull impostors on Earth culminated in him declaring war on all extraterrestrial species' living among humanity, which could pose a danger to innocent Skrulls, the citizens of New Asgard, and even several Avengers.

This most prominently featured humans targeting Skrulls, or those who they believed to be Skrulls, leading to the deaths of the Skrull news anchor Chris Stearns, and the human British Prime Minister, Pamela Lawton. Something of this magnitude only works in the MCU if every subsequent project commits, but this hasn't been the case, as Secret Invasion has practically been ignored, thanks to its disappointing performance. Even The Marvels failed to mention Secret Invasion at all, despite being something of a sequel to the project.
Captain America: Brave New World Can Justify Leaving Secret Invasion's Cliffhanger In The Past Close Although Secret Invasion's cliffhanger ending could have been interesting to explore in the MCU's future, it seems more likely that Marvel Studios will simply brush President Ritson's declaration of war under the rug. Secret Invasion's poor performance means that the events of the series may be glossed over, and perhaps even retconned in the MCU's upcoming projects, and Captain America: Brave New World is the perfect place for this to happen. Most notably, Thaddeus Ross becoming the President in Brave New World means Ritson no longer holds the position, which means Marvel Studios could simply have Ross reverse Ritson's ruling.
Currently, there has been no confirmation of a direct follow-up to Secret Invasion, and it seems very unlikely that this will ever happen, as the Phase 5 series is one of the MCU's lowest-rated projects. Because of this, other MCU projects must address some of Secret Invasion's unanswered questions, and after The Marvels failed to mention Secret Invasion whatsoever, Captain America: Brave New World is the next best option. Captain America: Brave New World's first look confirmed President Ross' election will be mentioned, so Ritson and his war on aliens could be referenced, perhaps ending it before it even began.
As well as marking the returns of Sam Wilson and Thaddeus Ross, Captain America: Brave New World will also see Samuel Sterns, Betty Ross, Joaquín Torres and Isaiah Bradley return to the MCU.
Other Secret Invasion Characters And Stories The MCU Still Needs To Address
President Ritson's crusade against extraterrestrials isn't the only loose end left unanswered after Secret Invasion. The Phase 5 series also revealed that a million Skrulls are living among humanity on Earth, yet this seems to have had little impact on the MCU. Secret Invasion's finale also teased a new team compiled by Sonya Falsworth and the Skrull G'iah, who absorbed the abilities of many notable MCU characters, and this would still be an interesting thread to follow. Captain America: Brave New World may brush some of these stories under the rug, but not all of them should simply be forgotten.
