10 New Secret Invasion Images & What They Reveal About The MCU Show

Several new Secret Invasion photos have been released that reveal new story details, new characters, and more. The upcoming Disney+ series marks a Captain Marvel reunion between Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and is confirmed to release later this year on the streaming service. Marvel Studios has not fully begun the Secret Invasion marketing campaign to this point, despite releasing a trailer for the series last year. The surprising gap between official updates on the series has left audiences waiting longer than expected for more news and promotional materials for the show.
What has been known about Secret Invasion is that it features one of the MCU's best casts and adapts one of the comics' most famous stories. The MCU is putting its own twits on the Skrull invasion storyline, scaling down the events to root the story around Nick Fury and Talos' efforts to find the shape-shifting aliens a new home after Captain Marvel. The decades of failure on their part has led to a Skrull rebellion forming. After only brief teases that Secret Invasion's story connects to multiple upcoming MCU projects, there is now much more known about the series thanks to Vanity Fair photos and story details.
10 Nick Fury Visits A Crypt In Secret Invasion One of the new Secret Invasion photos shows Nick Fury visiting a mysterious crypt. It is unclear if this is the resting place of some of his former Skrull comrades, but the crypt is marked by rune inscriptions, not the Skrull language. Nick Fury visiting the crypt in Secret Invasion could mean that whoever was buried here has an important role to play in cracking what the Skrulls are up to in the present day. This could even include Nick Fury finding a tomb holding someone that the Skrulls are posing as, raising the levels of distrust and paranoia that the super spy experiences in the series.
9 Nick Fury and Talos Embrace Decades After Captain Marvel The last time audiences saw Nick Fury and Talos together was in 1995 during the events of Captain Marvel. Although Spider-Man: Far From Home confirmed that they were still in communication several years later, another Secret Invasion image shows the two friends embracing once again. The dire nature of their reunion appears to weigh heavily on them both as they touch foreheads amidst fighting a Skrull rebellion. Samuel L. Jackson teased that their efforts to find a new Skrull home are "not going so well," and that will mean they feel some responsibility for the new Skrull enemies and scheme that is set into motion.
8 Emilia Clarke Plays Talos' Daughter & MCU Villain In Secret Invasion New looks at Emilia Clarke's Secret Invasion character are included, and they confirm that she plays Talos' daughter, G'iah. The character was briefly seen as a young girl in Captain Marvel, but she is now grown up during the events of the MCU Disney+ show. This not only debunks that Emilia Clarke is playing Abigail Brand, but details about G'iah's story in Secret Invasion reveal that she is an MCU villain. This is because G'iah is part of the Skrull radicals that are positioned as Secret Invasion's villains since they have broken off from Talos' group and have plans of their own.
7 G'iah and Talos Are On Opposite Sides Of Skrull War Another Secret Invasion photo released shows G'iah and Talos together, but the daughter and father are not on the same side of the brewing Skrull war. G'iah joins the Skrull rebellion after growing tired of how her father and Nick Fury have failed to find the Skrulls a new home. Clarke teased that G'iah's relationship with Talos is not in a great spot during the show after developing a rebellious spirit and watching her father fail. It even sounds like Talos has not spent much time with his daughter over the years due to his responsibilities as the leader of the Skrulls.
6 Maria Hill Returns In Secret Invasion After Being Abandoned By Fury Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill is back in these Secret Invasion images, and one teases how she is more involved in the action than before. This photo shows Maria Hill with a scar on her nose, which could connect to the actress' tease that she has had a rough life in recent years after Nick Fury largely abandoned her for his space adventures. Smulders' character has spent the last several years alone and not being able to get in contact with Fury. This has left her in a position to put out fires around the world without superpowers or some of Fury's resources on her side.
5 Maria Hill & An Eyepatch-Less Nick Fury Work Together Again Another Secret Invasion photo reveals that Maria Hill and Nick Fury will ultimately agree to work together again for the greater good of the world. The image provides a great look at Nick Fury's new eyepatch-less look, showing off the scars on his face and eye caused by Goose. Although they might not be in the best spot when Secret Invasion, the deep-rooted trust that they share is why they will join forces once more. In a world where the Skrulls can look and act like anyone, Fury and Hill need people they can trust. It's Hill who alerts Fury that the Skrulls might be planning something evil.
The no-eyepatch look for Nick Fury is an intentional choice for Secret Invasion to explore the vulnerable state that the character is in during the series. Jackson says that his character is "shaken" when the series begins and "checked out" from saving the world after not being able to prevent Thanos and seeing Iron Man and Black Widow die. He no longer believes he can fix things, and the decision to not wear his signature eyepatch is pulled from that feeling. "It's part of his vulnerability now" according to Samuel L. Jackson.
4 Secret Invasion's Rebel Skrull Villain Reveal (& Why The Avengers Won't Appear) The Secret Invasion images also include a look at Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), the leader of the Skrull rebellion. The photo teases how his Skrull faction works in the darkness to gain more power as part of their overall plan, which appears to be a takeover of Earth. The Skrull extremists are said to have taken matters into their own hands after growing frustrated by the lack of action on Talos' part. They are gathering unnamed resources as quietly as they can at first, but Gravik's group is not afraid to take force if the situation calls for it. Ben Mendelsohn compared the strife between Skrull factions to the Cold War.
Despite the threat the Skrull rebels pose to Nick Fury, Talos, and all of Earth, the Avengers are not going to be in Secret Invasion. Samuel L. Jackson teased that "people want them and he's not bringing them" as the conflict grows. The Nick Fury actor also revealed, "There's a very good reason he's holding back." It could be connected to the grief that SHIELD's former director is feeling after Avengers: Endgame and wanting to make amends for his mistakes without endangering more friends. Whatever the reason may be, Avengers reinforcements will not come in Secret Invasion.
3 Olivia Colman's Secret Invasion Character Is An MI6 Agent Another character revealed in the Secret Invasion photos is Olivia Colman's role as Sonya Falsworth. She is an MI6 agent who represents part of the show's geo-political story, as Colman's character is focused on how the Skrull crisis could impact England. Described as an antagonistic presence in Secret Invasion, Olivia Colman's character is described as "cold-blooded" by Samuel L. Jackson. Falsworth is part of the show's efforts to explore the global repercussions that the Skrull resistance has on the intelligence community, as she could have secrets of her own that are at risk of being exposed.
2 Everett K. Ross Is In The Shadows After Black Panther: Wakanda Forever The Secret Invasion images also tease Everett K. Ross' (Martin Freeman) return and how he has to work in the shadows now. Viewers last saw him in custody during Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but Ross is back for the spy series and becomes someone who works alongside Nick Fury. Everett Ross is no stranger to missions that require him to go outside what the law allows or include a certain layer of distrust. The former CIA operative is said to be one of the people familiar with the secret world of national intelligence services who Fury encounters along the way. War Machine also joins the story as another ally.
1 Skrulls Are Tired Of Hiding On Earth In Secret Invasion There is only one glimpse at a Skrull's natural form in the Secret Invasion photos, and it teases how the shape-shifting aliens are figuring out their place on Earth. It is not known who this Skrull is, only that she is female, making a number of the show's cast members suspects. But, Jackson teased that the Skrulls have grown tired of hiding and living like humans. Their desire to live in their normal skin is a driving plot point in Secret Invasion and potentially a clue for what the rebellious Skrull faction wants to do as part of their invasion.
