Why I"m Glad Bucky Barnes Isn"t In Captain America 4

Summary
  • Bucky Barnes's absence in Captain America: Brave New World benefits Sam Wilson's story, allowing the Marvel movie to focus entirely on the latter character.
  • Sam Wilson deserves to be the sole focus in his first Captain America movie, and not have attention pulled away in favor of Bucky Barnes.
  • Joaquín Torres is set to replace Bucky as Sam Wilson's right-hand man in Brave New World, which makes sense given the characters' relationship in the comics.
Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) may not be in Captain America: Brave New World, but it's ultimately a good thing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite appearing in the first three Captain America movies, thanks to his story being intrinsically linked to Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Marvel will break from tradition for Captain America 4. Bucky's absence was confirmed by Sam Wilson actor Anthony Mackie, who revealed the Winter Soldier won't appear in the movie when Captain America: Brave New World releases in 2025.
There's no doubt disappointment over Bucky Barnes not showing up in Captain America 4, especially since Stan's character has become a beloved fixture of the MCU since his debut in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger. However, it's a good decision for the Captain America: Brave New World cast, and will benefit not only Bucky Barnes' story in the long run, but more importantly, Sam Wilson's story. Bucky Barnes shouldn't simply be Captain America's sidekick, nor should he steal the limelight from Sam Wilson - so it's good he won't be in Captain America 4.

Sam Wilson Deserves To Be The Sole Star In His First Captain America Movie Bucky Barnes Would Pull Attention Away From Sam Wilson Close It's time for Sam Wilson's Captain America to shine.
For The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes shared the spotlight, with the MCU TV show following both their stories and how they intertwined after Avengers: Endgame. However, Captain America: Brave New World is meant to focus on Sam Wilson's Captain America, as the title clearly indicates. Sam Wilson's story doesn't need to be connected to Bucky's, and it's only fair for him to be the sole leading hero in his own movie. It may be tradition for Bucky Barnes to appear in Captain America movies, but that doesn't mean it needs to continue.

In fact, including Bucky Barnes would only distract from Sam Wilson's story. Since the movie's runtime will be shorter than that of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it makes sense to have as few leading characters as possible to ensure the story focuses on them entirely. Given Brave New World is a Captain America movie, Sam Wilson deserves to be the sole focus of the story, with the other characters supporting his narrative. It's time for Sam Wilson's Captain America to shine, and it would be difficult for Marvel to make sure that happens if Bucky were to appear.

The MCU Has Already Set Up Captain America 4's Bucky Replacement Joaquín Torres Was Introduced As Sam Wilson's Right-Hand Man Your browser does not support the video tag. Since Bucky Barnes has been elevated from Steve Rogers' right-hand man to a leading hero in his own right, it makes more sense for a new character to fill that role for Sam Wilson's Captain America. In fact, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier set up a character to do exactly that. The first episode of the 2021 MCU show introduced Joaquín Torres (Danny Ramirez) as part of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier cast. In the comics, Joaquín becomes Falcon when Sam becomes Captain America, so it seemed the MCU was setting up that storyline for the film franchise.

This would make Joaquín a replacement for Bucky as well, since he's closer friends with Sam than Bucky was. While Sam and Bucky seemed to overcome their differences in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, they'll never be friends the way that Steve and Bucky were. Instead, it's more likely for Sam and Joaquín to have that kind of close friendship. With Ramirez expected to return as Joaquín Torres and suit up as Falcon in Captain America: Brave New World, he's better positioned to be Sam's right-hand man and not pull attention away like Bucky would.
Bucky Barnes Deserves His Own Movie Separate To Captain America 4 The Former Winter Soldier Will Lead A Team Of Marvel Anti-Heroes In Thunderbolts Close Stan's Bucky Barnes has been part of the MCU for 13 years and has become one of the longest-running characters to still be active in the franchise. Since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier elevated Bucky to leading hero, he definitely deserves to stay there. Marvel must agree because the studio's executive Kevin Feige confirmed Bucky will lead the Thunderbolts team in their solo movie, which is set to release following Captain America: Brave New World. Although it's an ensemble movie, Bucky being the leader of the team will make him an integral character in the film.

If Bucky Barnes survives beyond Thunderbolts, it would be great to see the MCU explore his character further, either in another TV show or a movie of his own. Since he was introduced in 2011, Bucky has had a complex and emotionally compelling storyline, having been brainwashed by Hydra and then having to relearn how to be a normal person. His tragic story, which includes losing his best friend Steve Rogers when the former Captain America ventured to the past and stayed there, is ripe for plenty more exploration.
Captain America: Brave New World should be Sam's story, not Bucky's.
However, it's good that Bucky's story won't continue in Captain America: Brave New World, giving both him and Sam a chance to be developed separately. After all, Sam and Bucky can always reunite in a different MCU movie down the line, like Avengers: Secret Wars. But Captain America: Brave New World should be Sam's story, not Bucky's, so it's for the best that Stan won't appear.
Captain America: Brave New World Captain America: Brave New World (formerly titled New World Order) marks Sam Wilson's first MCU big-screen appearance as Steve Rogers' successor after receiving the suit and shield in Phase 4's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Anthony Mackie returns as the titular Avenger alongside Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, Carl Lumby as Isaiah Bradley, and Tim Blake Nelson as The Incredible Hulk's former ally Samuel Sterns. Harrison Ford makes his MCU debut replacing the late William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross.
